hi all i have a tj ll and i noticed today the inst. l/100km reading is going so high even just rolling around in 1st gear. its got a kn filter and that was put in months ago and it never affected the reading..but yesterday i changed my vacume hoses..could this be the cause? and can mitsubishi solve this? and would it really be using so much fuel..its going into the 70ls/100km

any help on this would be muchly appreciated

If that were true you would drown the engine and it would not run, or at worst use a full tank in less than 100Km.
Try resetting your trip puter or get a reading at 60kph cruising. If that doesn't help pull a spark plug - that will tell you for sure if it is running rich or your puter is telling lies. No way do I believe 70 L per 100 Km!

thats what i thought..and how do i go about resetting my trip? i painting the speedo cluster surrounding today and had to disconnect the cords would that reset it?

Oh yeah! Hope you disconnected the battery first!
Read the owners handbook, or ask MadMagna - I dont own a trip puter equiped magna myself.

Er, resetting trip computer is as simple as getting the L/100km display up, then pressing and holding the MODE button for about 2 seconds.

When rolling in traffic mine says stupid things, saw almost 200L/100km once, it's because you are hardly moving, and getting any distance for the fuel that it being used to keep the engine ticking over. Are you getting high numbers when cruising at speed?

70l/100km@10kmh = 7l/hr which would be equivalent 7l/100@100kmh what are the readings when cruising on a level road at 40 50 60 80 & 100kmh?

Well what do you expect when driving around in 1st gear? Of course your instantaneous fuel consumption is going to be high.
To get a realistic reading reset the trip meter when you next fill up with fuel, then check the average fuel consumption for the tank.

i sed just rolling around in first gear hardly any revs..i took it for a long drive and it has seemed to have improved. ill give it a test tomoro on 40 60 100 and so on..it goes in for service soon so ill see what mitsubishi says. ill reset the computer aswell.. thanks

i do obviously..wouldnt you shit yourself too if you seen that on your dash?

I doubt that anything much has changed with your car, just that you have recentley noticed the instantaneous fuel consumption figures.

I tend to drive with the trip 'pooter set to display instant fuel consumption all the time, so I can modify my driving habits to be more economical.

Heavy acceleration will obviously give extremely high consumption, but so does very slow driving - if you think about it, barely travelling along is going to take AGES for you to travel 100kms and think of all the revs your engine is doing to get basically nowhere.

Conclusion? Driving at 5-10 kmh in 1st or 2nd gear is NOT a fuel-efficient way to drive. Likewise, they have designed 'pooter to display "---" when you are stationary to avoid having stupidly large consumptionm figures displayed (as being stationary it would take an infinite amount of fuel to cover 100kms distance).

The "instant" read-out refreshes every few seconds or so, and you can easily notice this is you cruise steadily (esp with cruise control on), then encounter a rise - the car will rev harder to maintain speed (auto may even kick-down) and "instant" fuel consumption will take a few seconds to reflect that more fuel is being dumped into the engine.

Keep it set on instant fuel consumption for a week or two, and as stated keep an eye on the average consumption over a day, week, tankful.

As mentioned above, trip pooter is reset by holding the "mode" button depressed for a couple of secs. In a TJ II, the trip odometer is reset the same way if Trip miles are displayed - only the trip meter gets restet. BUT if Driving Time (in Hrs/Mins), Ave Fuel Consumption, Instant Fuel Consumption, are displayed and you reset - all these measures are reset. I usually reset the trip computer every time I refuel, and occasionally jot down the averages etc on the fuel receipt for the tankful I just bought - then reset trip miles and averages etc, so I have a "clean slate" for the new tankful of juice. Sadly, tho, I have yet to conduct any scientific studies of magna-dom with the data!!

Sadly, tho, I have yet to conduct any scientific studies of magna-dom with the data!!

i went thru a stage, where i recorded EVERYTHING into a funky little excell spreadsheet regarding fuel usage.

i discovered, that the trip computer is about (in my car anyway - each is different, age, wear tear tyres etc etc) 95% accurate over something like 20,ooo km
(yeah... i have no life!!!)

though, on highway crusing, cruise set, ac on and just drive, the average l/100 is higher, in some cases (again my car) by as much as 1.5l/100km!! (doesnt sound like much, but it adds up)

to OP - definately have a look at that instantanious readout at more real speeds - 50 etc. should read muuuuch nicer numbers.
can you smell raw fuel / see raw fuel spitting out the exhaust?
if it was running at 70l/100... you would expect a strong smell of fuel, maybe seeing it come out of the exhaust.

what does your AVERAGE l/100km readout currently say?

No, who cares what my dash says. As long as you do your 500kays and have to fill up your 60 odd litres I could not care less. Reset your dash like others have suggested and dont drive in 1st gear.

The instant fuel useage while it might be a little high, you are in 1st gear.

My dads VX calais (supercharged six) often reads 65-70lt/100km when doing the same.....
