Has anyone come across a generic resistor block for the blower motor that fits in a 3rd gen instead of going to mitsubishi?

Try a wreckers, or see a Mr Bitchy dealer. If you are competent with a multimeter you could solder in a 5W ceramic resistor into the circuit for the setting that has gone away, but it would be trial and error to get the ohm value of the resistor right. If I remember rightly they sit inside the fan housing and rely on airflow for cooling, so you would have to check clearance of the fan blades. I'd see a dealer and get a price first, to be honest.

For those of you interested mitsubishi call them power transistors and they are about $40. They are very easy to replace all you have to do is take out the glove box and then the glove box support bracket and you will see it.

Surely they would have the coloured banding, or some markings on them so you can determine the resistance?
I remember once the one in my lancer died. The soldering had come undone. Man it must've been hot. I just re-soldered it and BANG, fixed!!
the solder is like a thermal fuse ......motor drawing high current

It doesnt actually have resistors on it. Just coils of wire.

Not all are just coils of resistance wire. The only ones to use this in Mitsu are non climate control types. All climate control are variable speed as opposed to low medium high types and are controlled by a variable power transistor. KS Veradas for instance use a power transistor the size of a 20 cent piece. If you have an electronics type mate he should be able to rebuild yours quite cheaply. My Veradas one died and to rebuild it cost me 20.00 in bits from Dick Smith.
