View Full Version : Slow demister and car always fogging up.

Ok so I've got a small issue, my car always gets fogged up on the inside, rain, hail or shine.
I know this happens but why in the middle of the day when it's warm?
I think maybe the windows don't fit right, or have come out of place being an older car.
Also it takes forever for the demister to clear it up! is there anyway I tweak this to make it better?
Much appreciated,
Cuffy

that is weird that it fogs up even when its sunny... my front windscreen has the annoying habit of getting actual wetness on the inside (god damn it...) and the demister can't really do anything to it, leaving me to wipe it away with my t shirt which leaves a big smudge on my windscreen

i wonder if there is a product which you can coat the inside of the windscreen with to stop it fogging up? kinda like rain-x for fog?

Rain-x anti fog it's called

http://www.rainx.com/Products/Windshield_Treatment/Anti-Fog.aspx

you can also get it in a bottle at SCA.

yeah my windscreen gets wet too! if ya know what I mean.
I'll give that stuff a go.
While I'm here I'll ask why my drivers side window is all scratched, I think when I wind it down it is scratching it, because it's now noticeable and becoming hard to see through.

My left hand passenger side window has scratched marks in the tint, i think its from the supporter bracket thing covered in felt, not 100% sure tho, would like to know but haha

you could always take your door trim off and take a look. its a couple of screws and some clips

the problem is that you can't really see much with the trim off because all the power windows mechanisms are behind the actual door frame

if it fogs up even in good conditions, i suspect you either breathe WAY too heavily, or there is excess moisture inside that is causing the fogginess. Check all door seals to make sure no water is getting in somewhere.

:stoopid:

When it fogs up do you have the a/c button (little snow flake) on or off?
Where are the vents pointed to?

If you leave it pointed to windscreen, and either have the fan on low, or outside air coming in, and dont have the a/c button on, the air coming in will be very humid and will cause fog when its cold outside.

If you have the a/c button on and vents directed at the windscreen to long, the window will become wet inside with condensation, as the inside of the glass is colder than the outside.

Best way to demist front windscreen, which, by the way, mitsu has programmed into the climate control of the L/W series, is the turn it to the windscreen outlet, turn to warm/hot, set to out side air and then turn on AC. In the L/W series, the AC turns on automatically and air is set to outside as soon as the outlet is set to windscreen. I see lots of people wiping away at their windscreen in cars with A/C. By its very own nature, an AC is a dehumidifier as its air is very drying.

Well I don't breathe heavily at all lol
But I think you're right about the door seals, they seem out of place.

Its nothing to do with door sills, its only because its been raining all week in SA. which is why all the humidity condenses inside the car with the effect of the human body heat emitting more humidity related condensation. You have no choice but to use the airconditioning. That is the only way. I tried absolutely everything, but for an extra $2 a tank for a/c, id rather just have the comfort of not driving blind/ smearing the inside of the windscreen.

Note: if the A/C is slow to react as a demister, and it is selected to blow air to the windscreen, you may need an aircond regas. The idea is that the dryer unit in the dash where the blower is will condense all the moisture causing very dry air to blow out, which will pick up the moisture on the inside of the windscreen. In all cars that I have had, it normally only takes no more than 10 seconds to completely clear up the mist.

Make sure the drain for your a/c is clear....water is coming out the bottom of the car when a/c is on

Heater core maybe leaking inside the car this will make it fog up inside all the time

I'm with suggestions from simo and mightymag - if drains are blocked your outside air is blowing across a puddle in the airbox, so its pre-hydrating the air, making it harder for the demisting action of air-con to be effective.

If external leaks or leaking heater core have water in the cabin where it shouldn't be, same thing - there is unecessarily higher humidity inside the car and makes it harder for air-con/demister to do its job which is normally quite quick.

check your coolant if its loosing coolant could be a leak in the heater core which leaks inside dash causing moisture.or check that your air con overflow tube is not blocked if it is water can sit on the tray inside causing moisture inside window /floor mats geting moist near under dash area usually passenger side is a tell tale sign
hope this helps

Definately sounds like moisture getting in somewhere.

Do you use both A/c and heat to clear the windows ? Should clear them up no problem if they are working OK.

will these work on my mirror in my shower, so i can actually have a shave without wiping it every 5 seconds?

i was sold it under the impression it was an antifog mirror, being a shower shave one and all.

This happened to me in my TR and it was because the heater core had broken/leaked and hence released vapour onto the windshield. Maybe that the case?

Check the carpets in the front footwells.
My TJ when it rains heavily drops a little water onto the passenger side mat.

Car then fogs up and is very hard to demist for a couple of days.
Still have not been able to put the time into findig out where the water is coming from.
It's not the heater core as it only happens after heavy rain.
