Finally got around to pulling my trans out on sat and stripping it down today...
Its not as bad as it may of been but worse than what i thought... the low speed reverse wave spring let go...
i picked out bit of metal on my last service... and pulled it out before it failed.
Pulled three inch long pieces out of the filter.. and what remained of the wave spring was in half.. luckly it only destroyed the low reverse brake piston and the low reverse pressure plate will put pics up during week....

Cost so far... $270 reseal kit.
$38 new wave spring
$30 new filter
$350 for engine crane
Still to come... $250ish for reco torque converter
$200ish for new piston and pressure plate.
$80 for oil

Still better than $2500 for a reco trans

Please tell me you didn't get a replacement wave-spring of the overlapping/3-layer type?

I had a auto reconditioned due to that bloody thing ($2200) - the auto place I went to got a thicker wave-spring which is only one layer (they think its out of an earlier spec, but they are not sure about that). Dad's TJ also let go same way - he pulled box out and took in for rebuild then refitted the box ourselves - that was $900-00.

In both our cases we made sure to avoid the type of wave spring that gave up, and had the single-layer thicker type put in.

The car runs!!!!

Took longer than i thought kept finding my parts needed replacing....
basicly replace the whole reverse gear..

total cost $900 in parts
$350 for engine crane
and four and a half weekends from start to finish....

just took the car for its first run in 5 months and runs like a dream.... smoother shifting and no clunck into reverse....
although first couple times lock up clutch engaged it was fairly harsh.

things still to do front rocker cover gasket, all those annoying plastic gaurds new coolant (had to drop old coolant to access the valve body properly.

Good work mate, these are not the easiest trans to rebuild

What model car do you have, only reason I ask is I have a few really good transmissions lying around here that may have been a cheap alternative for you
