Hi guys, I have a 2001 TJ Sports Sedan.
Recently I have noticed a funny damp smell coming from the inside of my car and have located a damp spot in the front passenger side footwell (foot space)
it is in the right hand side up towards the firewall...
I have no idea where it is coming from, i can find no evidence of a leak above it from the air con or anything in the dash, its coming from underneath the carpet.... i have the feeling a hole is in the underside of the car body or something...
what can I do about this? has anyone here had the same problem?
Any advice would be much appreciated,
Cheers

Sounds like heater core or maybe the base windscreen/dash panel that some have mentioned. If I find the thread i'll post it. If it's heater core it's probably a dash out repair, and considering it's winter a lot of people get this, an otherwise unused heater gets used and all of a sudden. You could try running a hose from the outlet around the back of the motor and into the engine again, bypassing the firewall inlet and outlet, and see if the leak stops. Means you'll be without the heater, but AC can keep your windscreen clear on a wet day, and get it to a mechanic for a check.

but there is no wetness up under the dash that i can feel, it feel like its coming from under the car, or under the carpet in the footwell maybe a gromit is missing from teh firewall or something??
is this easy to check? just put it up on a hoist?

I had the same problem and thought it comin from under neath but was actually heater core. If the damp area is oily that will be the source most likely

Heater Core, the coolant comes down the back of the fire wall, over and usually behind the ECU and will create a damp spot and will eventually create a puddle in that corner.
Is initially a slow leak so will not be that obvious
As for the leaf guards stopping water, that is a load of rubbish, if the water is getting in that area there are more issues such as the plenum chamber drains being blocked

well i took it to mitsu today, they found a leak in teh firewall, so they sealed it up, time will tell if thats fixed it.
i had a problem like that aswell, was back driver driver side ~ someone had cracked a can of jimmy ~ and it saturated the floor mat right through and only the bottom 1/2 was wet and i never realised till i took it out this morning =.=
Make sure the drain for the a/c is not damaged as it goes thru the firewall

Hey Beef, my same colour, same year, same model car from the same state... leaked the same!!
was a crack in painted body sealant that comes from under LH side of windscreen
down past bonnet hinge, probably past accident damage?
easy silicon fix, hope yours is OK now
cheers

OK I've given up, I'm taking the wagon to a Dealer tomorrow to see if they can find the leak.
