hay all

I was checking the condition and the tension of my timing belt today. i braught my car 20000km ago from a private dealer witch claims the belt was replaced by a mechanic and there is a dalco timing belt sticker there aswell. I took some pictures on the inside were the little cogs are they actually look in good nic but the top of it looks worn but might be normal.? I took some pictures of the timing belt and one picture of me pulling the belt and seeing the tension that its holding.

The tensioner is designed to depress after a period of time to take tension off the belt when not in use, so if the cars been off for a while this is normal (to an extent, sometimes tensioner can fail and belt can be sloppy)

best way to tell, start car up with timing covers off and see if the belt tensions up when you turn it off, if when you turn it off the belt is still sloppy your tensioner is poo

You can not tell the condition of a belt by looking at it unless it is a brand new one in the first place

If in doubt change it, is the only option

ahh wouldnt all belts have been new at some point?? it looks to be about the same condition as my belt (27,000km) slight label wear , teeth condition etc. of course thats not an exact science is it!!! ha ha ha:happy:

yes. as tuffy said, the tensioner takes up the slack when the engine is running, as long as the last guy did a proper job of the timing belt, you will be fine. put it this way it hasnt slipped so it cant be far off perfect!!!! mine is the same , with engine off there is slack between cams, feel the tension on the downhill run of the belt, between cam and crank, should be tight there.

Ok well when i feel the tension between the top two cams down to the water pump when the cars off there is slack there but once started the slack is gone pritty much

yeah mate that is 100% normal. my last cambelt change was done at a dealership with proper tension tool and mine is the same. i can turn my waterpump pulley by hand with car off, and can twist my belt the same amount as your pic showed. honestly you have no problem. if it was to loose it would of slipped and you would know about it. i was worried too but i looked on here and found out its fine, plus i checked at mitsi dealer to double check.

bump.?

There is slack after a certain time between the 2 cams until you start it up where the tensioner then takes up the slack. I already said this a few posts ago mate.
