i know our cars dont have a knock sensor so is there any extra power to be had running 95/98 over 91 ron? my sticker under bonnet says 91 MINIMUM, so was wondering if a higher octane would increase power. only reason i ask is my brother has a 95 V300 (magna 2nd gen) and his 3l gains 4kw using 95 over 91 according to owners manual. it said this applys to the multipoint engines only. thought all 6G72/6G74 were multi point injected??

no knock sensor so no increase, although some will say otherwise. Premium fuels do include better cleaning qualities though apparently and your car will benefit (how much is hard to say) from running premium time to time.

AFAIK the 2nd gens did have a knock sensor, as did the 380, but the 3rd gen didnt

ah yes that would explain it. i usually use the caltex 91 with tecron (if it works) and have tried the 95 with no noticible difference. cheers guys

Haven't noticed any difference running my car on 95 or 98.
Noticed an appreciable difference in my 94 Barina though (euro Opel Corsa), but it had a plug under the bonnet that could be changed to 91 or 95/98, was quite a bit smoother and had a bit more power on 95/98.

I was running 91 for just under a month and my car sounded like it was running on dust and the accelerator felt rusty. As soon as i started using premium my car loves me again lol
Nah! mine didn't run any different till it was tuned for 98.

I've tried 91/95 and 98 and I need to say that for whatever reason I seem to get the best consistant economy on 91 strange to say.
The 2nd gens also had higher compression engines, 10.1:1 as opposed to 9.0:1, except the ralliart at 9.4:1. The 2nd gens also had variable flow inlet manifold, long path for low revs for low down torque, short path for high revs for high end power and a mix of both at mid revs. 2nd gens also had adjustable timing, together with higher compression engine and premium unleaded will gain extra ponies. Knock sensor is only there so that the engine can adjust timing if it detects knocking (usually happens due to poor fuel or lower octane fuel than what the base timing was adjusted to, correct me if I'm wrong).
