I doubt you will keep the VR4 box, as they are 4WD, and are pretty hard to convert. The GSR Galant gearbox (KM-206, I think) will bolt up to the VR4 motor, I would expect that would fit in the Magna, if a VR4 one would.

yeah forgot bout that  . oops. yeah maybe it was a gearbox from another type galant. im not very familiar with the galants. when i read bout putting the VR4 engine into the magna i think it said it was accompanied with a galant gearbox but not sure if it specified which one. ohwell, thanks for clearing that up.
if u want prices... that guy got a VR4 halfcut from the wreckers for $4000. this includes the front half of the whole car obviously :D
Hello,
I Have been viewing this forum for sometime now and think i should finally give some imput lol. I drive a 1989 Magna GLX wagon. at the moment it is in the mechanics having a VR4 enigine fitted too it.I can confirm that the VR4 engine fits, u only need to modify the right hand side mount. The gearbox bolts straight up, though i dont know how long it will last for lol. The Mods i am doing to my engine is, VR4 clutch, 3" turbo back exhaust, Pod filter, AVO stage 1 intercooler and a bigger fuel pump. I got an engine package with engine, ecu and loom for $2500 and its a Jspec engine.

Sogg.... i love u. all i wanted was some 2 say yes it works. now i know where every cent i earn is going...
ohh and that first pic... apparently the vr4 motor blows the TP gb casings in about 18months and the VR4 box lasted like a week and half (doesn't like driving 2 wheels off a 4wd gb) but as said the gsr box should work well.
and again.... I LOVE U!!!!!
EDIT: 1 more question... how does the computer fit... is it a strat swap or is there wiring changes needed???

DISCLAIMER: Love in a non sexual way... unless ur a hot chick.
LOL! too bad mate no chick here.
ok we havent done the computer yet, but the plan is to patch in the VR4 computer using the magna loom and vr4 loom. Gbox wise i dont know wat we are going to do there yet, i am looking into boxs at the moment. idealy a Eclipse box would be the best because the came with a 4G63t stock and are FWD, only problem is that they are rare as anything. But i am doing my best to hunt something down. Anymore questions are welcome
Whats it gonna cost all up? i just got hit over the head today with the idea instead of doing anything to my magna anymore im just gonna keep it running and in good nick and buy a subaru liberty RS instead, it'll cost about the same was what your doing but the RS is all paw and handles like its on rails.
I am budgeting around 6-7000 all up including motor, brakes and engineer certificate. I have DBA cross drilled an Slotted rotors on order. 4wd would be a dream coz getting traction is going to be a real *****, i am planing to put 225s and do up the suspension to help stop weight transfer.

Sogg, where are you located?
There are a couple of places in Sydney/Newcastle I would think should be able to source you a Galant GSR gearbox. They are apparently unbreakable (to some extent), I have heard of people putting about 300kW through them with no probs. Mine just leaks oil...
In Sydney north of Penrith - SportsClassic cars - wreckers and rallyers of VR4s, lots of Galant parts apparently (I haven't been there yet) - www.sportsclassic.com.au
In Newcastle - Rally Experience - Mark is the guy's name - I think the phone number is 0413 300 000, look them up in the phone book.
I am in melbourne, but if i can find a good gbox i will bring it from interstate like i did with the engine (couldnt find any in victoria) as soon as the standard gbox blows i will be replacing it, most likely with a gsr box. i have seen em for around $450 and hopefully should bolt up no worries
My mate has a VR4, he recently replaced the gbox cause it had 200k on it.
anyway, the original didn't but the replacement has a switch on the gbox to put it into FWD only, I think he has to disconnect the rear drive shafts from the transfer case still. It is handy to run on 2wd dyno's and creating smoke hazards.
