hey guys,

just had my car in for a service today and they said i needed a new alternator/aircon belt
i said no worries how much? they wanted 100 bucks to fit it!!
im nah thats fine i'll do it myself

now i went past repco on the way home and told them what i needed
they said theres 2 types of belts, only difference between the 2 is ones 20mm longer
the one i got off them is a 6PK1195, is this the correct belt?
cars a 03 TL
thinking i may aswell do the power steering belt while im at it (anyone know the correct size for this)

also whats the easiest way to check if it has the correct tension?

thanks

The ACDelco catalogue lists the 6PK1195 as equivalent to AW343977, so if you have that belt fitted, then the 6PK1195 will fit.

It's worth changing while you're down there - it also helps that it's quite easy to do.

yeah i'll check the belt tomorrow to see if its the right one
if not i'll grab the right one when i pop down to grab a power steering belt
whats the go with tension on new belts? cant put them in the same spot as the old ones right?
is dayco a good brand?

Dayco actually seem to make the factory fitted alternator belt.

Tension wise - When you fit the belt over the pulleys, wind the adjuster bolt in until the belt is reasonably tight, then lay a straight egde along the bottom of the crank and A/C pulleys. Find the middle of the belt between the two pulleys, and test the deflection with a small ruler. If you apply about 10kg of pressure, you should be seeing a deflection of 6-7mm on a properly tensioned belt.

how do you apply 10kg of pressure?
is the power steering belt the same?

It's almost impossible to do accurately lol

It's a fairly forgiving setup, you pretty much want the belt tight enough so that it'll deflect when you press quite hard on it. Before you pull the old belt off, play around with some measurements. A worn belt will be fairly easy to press/deflect; 8-10mm of movement is average.

PS belt: a new one should have 8-9mm of movement, a worn one 11-13mm.

Power and Alt belts are different

The TE and Older TF had 2 different belts, all of the 3.5 from late TF onwards had the same belt so again Repco is showing how useful they are. Typical when you put 12 year old plebs behind the counter

I think the belt listed above is the correct one, I will have a look in my shed later as I usually keep them here is stock anyway

haha plebs lol
nah the ones i normally deal with are pretty good
but going off the dayco website it does say there are two belts for the alternator/aircon
either way i just had a quick look under the bonnet and was lucky enough to have the numbers in clear veiw (AW343977 which is what veradabeast said), which matches up with the belt i have in my hands atm
just need to go down and grab a power steering belt (4PK0900 i think) and swap the belts over next weekend :)
thanks for the help so far guys :D
