Thats not that big of a deal. You need to be prepared to fork out up to 1500 during service times I reckon.

Major service ????

The max i ever paid was @ 100,000K service i.e. timing belt, water pump, platimum plugs, etc, and which also included transmission oil change and engine oil/filter change change Like $1000.00

The 2 belts are like $25 each, tyres probably $130-$230 depending on what size and type you go for and centre muffler? Wtf for? Just take it out and weld a bit of straight pipe in!

i just rang a place just now and they told me the prices ,

Alternator Belt = $35
Power Steering Belt = $20

The thing is installing them , there a machnic that i asked earlier he said he could do just for installing for $160 , if i could someone install these belt''s i would most great-full, and if any in Victoria can do this, i'll pay you money are shout a slab of beer.

mate, do yourself a favour and get a service manual, $160 for a alternator and powersteering belt change is shocking when its such a simple job. you will save yourself ALOT of money in the end. trust me, i gave mechanics alot of money for jobs i later found were simple. i cringe when i think back on what i spent on car repairs, like $250 to replace the rear disc on my old trooper, when i later found the parts are $50 each and all ya do is undo 1 bolt, flip up caliper and pull it off, push the disc on and flip caliper back down, replace bolt. done. I think theres even a manual to download somewhere on here.

bingo tuffTR, if he had the manual he could check all this stuff and even if he got the shop to do the work, atleast you can go in armed with info on what needs doing and what doesnt. I would be suspicious if they said to do the cambelt when its not due, theres many guys who will tell you a parts stuffed, change nothing and tell you its fixed, and charged accordingly.

Amen brother. Did the rear plugs myself on the Magna last week. I used to think "manifold has to come off - HUGE job" Then when I actually did it, it was piss easy. Same thing with flushing the auto tranny myself...

it cracks me up when guys pay for servicing. i never used to have a clue how to do these things either, but its doing them that teaches you how. dont be scared to get dirty or make mistakes.

Gotta agree playing around with a car is Fun if your into it, if not best to pay someone else to get their hands dirty.

Out of interest why not drop into an exhaust place and get a quote? That's what I would do.
Same with your tyre's, don't stick to the big boys shop around and get some good ones for a decent price. These days they all wanna sell sell sell, also helps if one wears a low cut top ;).

Problem is, when it comes time to sell your car and the prospective buyer asks about the service records and you say "ohhh yeaaah bra, I do the services ma self" and you can turn alot of people away. Plus, not everyone has the time or can be bothered to do these things themselves.

Sounds like a good time to go get yourself a good set of factory alloys with good tyres man. Won't be much more than getting new tyres.

Generally its quicker to do the service yourself than to book the car in, leave for most of the day and pick it up - thats why I service my car, I dont have time to take off work, or to sit around for 5 hours for an oil change.

That has to be one of the major problems I have with mechanics you book your car in at 8am drop it off and find out that it ain't ready till 4 or 5pm just for a service what do they do with your car all day long. I always make a note of the k's in the cluster and reset the trip counter and one time I found that my car had done a few k's and when I asked what have you been doing with my car cause I know you have been driving it around town by the looks they just deny it. Never went back to that guy again.

Simple really, you drop it off at 8am so it joins a queue with the other cars they have to do that day, and you pick it up at 5pm because they may have gotten to it late. Surely if you've DIY'd any part of your car you'd know that parts of it can take 2 hours instead of the half hour it was supposed to take, usually the case with problem solving on other vehicles that may have come before yours in the shop and so on...

Same with fixing computers ;)

I have my services done for my TL in 2 ways at a dealership:
- if its a minor service on my day off, I'll drop it off at 8am they say you can wait for it as its the first car there they'll work on it first and be done by no later than 11am usually done by about 10am.
- if it would take longer (major service) or i cbf waiting for the minor service, i usually have a courtesy car to take with me.

good old courtesy cars are the bomb. Bought my magna from holden so and know guy that works there so i get cheap service's and use of the courtesy car.

I reckon! most I've paid for a service was about $210 including a auto service and accessory belts, and my mechanic drops me off at work\home and picks me up again when it's done.

The place I go do a whole check over the entire car. Transmission and drivetrain, suspension, brakes and safety equipment and advise me of what needs replacing/adjusting. Iv never had to spend that much but I have spent 900 when I had my timing chain done in my old TR at service time.
