it also depends on the offset of the mags

is your car lowered by any chance?
i know you can fit 9.5" at the rear and 8.5" up front with the correct offset
cummins had this on his ralliart

the lower the offset number, the further the rims will sit towards the outside of the car.
i think mine are 36 offset with 235 45 17 just fit on with ralliart flares
its a hard q to answer as the tyre size, mag size, suspension all add up to how big you can go just remeber if you get flares at some point this is a factor and can limit how wide you can go i found that out the hard way got super lows and want fit but lows will

I used to have 18x8 rims with 45 offset and looked good. I used 235/40R18 tyres. They didn't stick out, nor had any rubbing.

now have 19x8.5 with 235/35ZR19 tyres and offset of 40, and looks even better :) Bit of rubbing when full lock, but nothing to worry about.

Do you need to keep it legal as well ???
If yes, then it will depend on what is written on the tyre placard of your car and I think the rule in NSW is you can go 1" wider than that, maybe 1.5" with an engineers certificate for them.

I lol in W.A.

Rim width must not exceed the maximum rim width specified by the manufacturer by more than 25mm (1") (for passenger vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973, the manufacturers rim width shall be taken as that specified on the tyre placard).

In any event, rim width shall not exceed 177.8 mm (7") unless specified by the manufacturer as standard equipment for the vehicle in question. No increase in rim width is permitted for vehicles fitted with original equipment rims in excess of 177.8 mm (7") width.

I thought if you kept the tyre to the same diameter as the original everything would be dandy?

I checked that when I got the 20" rims and they matched perfectly so as far as I know things are shiny

yea u can go 2" leagaly but some1 told me if i go wider than 7.5 let the rubbing beginFail. 8" +35 is fine. 8.5" +40, or in my case +42 8.5", a little rubbing, as el3ment said no big issue.

I've got 245/30/R20 and they are scrapin like a bitch.

Normal driving and everything is fine its only when the body bounces which surprisingly isn't often. I have to get the guards rolled and till then won't have more than one person in the backseat.

Moment after posting this I did a little conversion of 245mm to inches which if correct is 9.6".... thats not good for me aye?

JarRah, if you could fit 355mm wide rubber on your factory rims, then it would be legal in NSW.
There's no rule about tyre size, it's all wheel size that the rules are based on. Another example of stupid rules.
Mind you, at least we have a slightly better rule than WA :)

If you want a read, the RTA rules are in this PDF: http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi09_rev4.pdf
