hey there 2nd genners!

my partners mum is looking at buying a new car, and she's left the decision to me.

i've been searching tradingpost and carsales etc, and the 2nd gen verada's seem to be going around the 1500-2500 mark, which seem like bargains considering the features compared to cars in the similar price brackets.

she trusts my decision, so of course i'm going to be picky as i dont want to buy her a lemon, so i was wondering if there is any common faults that should be picked up when inspecting/test driving?

KS ei or xi is your bet.

Ummmmm try and get one under 200,000 I suppose

Make sure timing belt has been done at 100,000, check service records etc. if you can.

As said, make sure it does not blow smoke or else give them $900....I doubt the suspension would of been replaced in it's life either so it'd probably ride fairly...soft, check the oil and water to make sure there is no milky residue in either, and take her for a drive, make sure trans does not slip, no clicks when you turn etc

well really all he'll get is climate control, thats about it compared to a KS, should still have windows and not sure but *possibly* cruise

didn't the KS have the drievers airbag and abs with the better brakes?

drivers airbag was optional and brakes are the same size just the ABS bit, but the ABS system on these are crap anyway

i wouldnt bother buying a 2nd gen. The 3rd gen is miles ahead on everything except looks and price.

OP: "my partners mum is looking at buying a new car, and she's left the decision to me."

Have you asked her how "new" the car should be, and what size? When a female says "I leave the decision to you", alarm bells start to ring in my head. They may not be helpful in making the right decision, but if you make the WRONG decision they will certainly let you know, and you may live to regret it. A female member left it to me too, and I got her a Magna - 6 months later and a few dents, and a lot of complaints - then I twigged - TOO BIG!! - got her a Lancer instead, problem solved, no complaints, no dents.

KR Ei has cruise and power windows no climate air, parras, power antenna or ABS. From memory KS Xi had airbag KS Ei didnt.

indeed this is correct. but there are a few KS Eis kicking around with airbag, although with the ugly steering wheel...

yeah in the 7 years i've known her she's had everything from Valiant Regals to Swift/Barina's, the latest have been a VN Calais (mint condition, got stolen!) and an EB Falcon wagon (smashed into by a drunk driver, while parked outside her house!) so size etc isn't really an issue, mainly looking at value for money, and hopefully something at least as close to the luxury as the Calais... maybe slightly better economy than the last 2?

cheers for that! if this one turns out to be a dud, it'll definitely be worth looking at
