big nut on the bottom of the trans, and fill via the dipstick, also make sure you use the correct fluid eg penrite MHP and replace the external filter ( looks like an engine oil filter)

Best to Search these forums for older threads... there have been a few, sometimes with vigorous discussion.
Firstly, depending upon which model you have (TE,TF etc) you may NOT have the external spin-on filter on the transmission - it was deleted by the TJ-series, for instance. I "think" it was on TE and TF, and disappeared on TH, its definately NOT on my TJ or my KJ. Ooop, my bad - you have a TE, so YES, change the spin-on filter..... its an uncommon size, so you probably won't find it going esp cheap anywhere - but shop around for best deal.
Secondly, the vast majority of members will recommend that you ONLY use genuine Mitsubishi Trans Fluid. Its priced fairly competitively, actually.
Thirdly, it is almost always suggested that you don't simply do a "drain-and-top-up" fluid change - this will result in only half or less of the fluid being renewed. If you simply drop the fluid, you will not change the large amount of fluid which sits in the torque convertor, nor in the passages in the transmission - you will retain a large quantity of old fluid and contaminants in the transmission.
Recommendation is to do the 'drain-and-top-up' initially - THEN do a FLUSH by disconnecting the trans fluid lines after in comes OUT of the radiator trans cooler, and running engine briefly to pump some trans fluid out..... NEVER letting too much out that trans runs low on fluid, and topping-up through the Transmission dipstick as you go. You continue to flush/top-up/flush/top-up until you get clear new fluid being flushed out. You also need to cycle through all the gear-selector positions as you do this so that the valve-body in transmission gets old fluid flushed out. Suggestion is that you buy 3 x 5-litre bottles of Mitsi trans fluid to cover the flushing process, this shoul dbe enough and will commonly have a bit left over. This sounds like a several-man job to me, unless you have about 8 arms and can be in several places at once.
Its seems like a lot of hassle - but keeping these transmissions clean and in good order is paramount - rebuilds start at about $2000-00. If you are going to do it, you might as well do it the correct way.
There are links from this forum to Genuine Mitsi Workshop Manuals - I'd recommend you download them as PDF files and have a read about your car, its the manual that Dealers would use, so has heaps of detailed info. There is no manual linked especially for the TE and TF series, sadly - but if you access the TH manual it will be 95% accurate for your car. Search for "Workshop manual" will find it.
