Hi guys,

had an issue with my stereo all of a sudden no sound checked my amp yesterday and both the fuses blew and in the process of replacing the fuses connected it back to the capasitor directly it then started smoking straight away (burnt smell) from there i disconnected the power and left it off...

now i went to JB hifi and they advised me that it would be better gettng a new one.. is that true or could i repair this one? had anyone know any locations that repair amps? since it powers all my 4 speakers and sub i have no music now :tantrum:

Cheers in advance

What do you mean you connected it back to the capacitor directly?

PS. Don't ask JB Hi-Fi for advice, they like most mainstream stores will ALWAYS advise you to get a new product if that means they can get money out of you.

I have an Alpine V12 amp that was repaired by a standard electrical repair place (Everetts?) in Liverpool, Sydney.

First off it went back to Pioneer or importer 2 or 3 times under warranty, then outside of warranty I gave it to these guys and then it was fine for 4 years.

So generally speaking, mine was pretty straight forward and they have a lot of large, high power components, so a smart person on electronics should be able to fix it for you.

Depends what they will charge to repair versus cost of a replacement, and how much you value that specific amp.
eg: You might be able to replace it with a 2nd hand one, cheaper than repairing it.

hiya...
ok its an Infinity 5 channel... need to dig up the manuals or grab the model number...

the capacitor discharged completly.. and i changed the fuses and instead of plugging the capasitr to another battery dirrectly and charging it... i plugged the main fuse near the car battery to postive to give it power again and the boot then started smoking... i dc the postive then and left it off... all my audio is currently off:(

cheers

Similar thing happened to once.. turned out to be a fried transformer in the power supply which was an easy and cheap enough fix thanks to jaycar.... however, got it turning on but still no sound... mosfet chips were fried... those aren't cheap.

get it looked at if you need to but with amps, generally not worth the cash to repair. as for warranty, i'm guessing you'll be telling a white lie since installation error is not covered.

Capacitors can retain a charge, in electronics there is a proper procedure to discharge them.
