Guys,

After some thoughts & advice per the title.

I'm running Yokohama A-drive R1 rubber in 235/40-18 size.

Done about 20,000 km on them now, rotated them about 10,000 km ago, so nearly time to rotate again.

From new they have always been very sensitive noise wise to the road surface. Nice and quiet on smooth black top (e.g. stone mastic asphalt), but a bit noisy on course chip hot mix, like most country roads tend to be.

Now they seem to be getting even noisier and have developed a slight rumble on all surfaces. I have found this development of rumble around the 20,000 km mark on most tyres I've had over the years. And now getting very noisy on course chip surfaces.

So instead of getting new and 'quieter' tyres (still at least another 30,000 km left in these), I'm wondering about putting in some sound deadening material.

I'm thinking of sticking some material on the inner sides of the wheel well plastic guards.

Maybe something like Dynamat.

So I'd like some advice on:

Will it work?

How hard is it to do?

How much would it cost?

What is the best material to use, without costing a bomb?

KJ.

Hi KJ , when i did the sound system in my TE Altera i went and bought a heap of sound deadening sheet from CARE at wingfield. They are suppliers to the trade ph83471355. It was like a black sheet of rubbery tar like stuff that you peeled the backing of and stuck to whatever. From memory it was alot cheaper than buying brand name sound deadener from car stereo/auto joints. Size i think was 40x40cm

Hi kj,

Sound proofing the wheel arches won't really do much unfortunantly, however what you can do is soundproof the firewall, rear wheel arches and rear firewall in the cabin to reduce in-cabin sound levels. Peter_Pan did this and it made a noticable difference in cabin sound levels.

Yes the rear arches are deadened , the firewall and bonnet have some sort of material attached to it not sure how effetive this stuff is.
The boot has got some fimsly carpet in it and the boot lid as weel but not the tyre well.
May be the front tyres have to go.
The road noise is reallynone existent untill I hit the secoundary roads a high speed.
The front tyres are Federal Formoza FD3 are almosyt brand new and were on the car when purchesed with 50% rear originals on the back.
Any heard of them before,
Cheers Chenzo
