View Full Version : Evoscan cable - which one is it?
Have been looking at www.limitless.co.nz for over a year now going "should buy this setup". But the dollar collapsed and the price shot up.
Now there seems to be a cheaper option on their website - 3rd item down
http://www.limitless.co.nz/cables/
"OpenPort 1.3D USB OBDII/MUTIII/SSMII Datalogging USB Cable
16pin OBDII Datalogger Cable, compatable with ALL ISO9141-2 OBDII vehicles since 1996, includes 1994+ Mitsubishi MUTII, and includes 1999+ Subaru SSMII.
- Datalogging support EvoScan v2.6 - 1994-2008 Mitsubishi Datalogging support (excluding EvoX).
- No reflashing support, this is a pure datalogging only cable. "
If I can read right, this will plug into our diagnostic ports OK. I don't need ECU reflash, just want to be able to read the data. So It starts getting around A$100 again.
Can someone confirm to me that this cable is the one we need to connect a laptop to our cars please. And if it is, I'm getting one this time.
Regards, Tony
PS and why do I want one? Cause I can! I'm thinking this setup + a tablet PC would make a great car PC setup.

Bump.........
I think I read in another thread in the past couple of weeks that we need a 1.3U cable - can't search right now, but thought I'd throw that in until it can be confirmed.
Cheers, Oggy.
update: found it here: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82904&p=1317330&viewfull=1#post1317330
I was right, WytWun says that a 1.3U or 2.0 cable is needed.

In the context of reflashing (especially AWDs and FWDs with auto), what I wrote is correct. If the OP is just after logging, then the 1.3D cable should be fine.

I use the openport 2.0 plug/cable on my magna and evo. I use ecuflash (on both cars) and evoscan (on both cars) with it. Reason i went with this cable was to cover both of my cars instead of having 2 different cables, even though the openport 2.0 is slower at datalogging on the magna but for what i need it works just fine and it works very well with Mode23 logging on my evo x.

Yeah WytWun is correct - 1.3D is fine/cheap for no flashing.. basically ecuflash is a $40 license.

EcuFLASH is FREE download software BUT evoscan has a $25 once off download it then comes with free updates after that.

EcuFlash itself as a download is free but if you buy a cable with ecuflash support, you pay a $40 license in the purchase cost of the cable.
This is why the 1.3D openport is cheaper, it has no ecu flashing supporting compared to the 1.3U.

Well i bought my cable openport2.0 cable last year and it had no licence fee and ive had ecuflash/openecu on my comp for over 2 years and have never payed a cent to use it and i get all the software update emailed to me as they become available.
I bought my cable direct from Tactrix in the usa NOT from Limitless nz, thats probably why u pay a licence fee as your paying for evoscans (limitless) version of there reflash software (which is very limited in what cars it can do compared to ecuflash/openecu)
As i already had the cable required it was just a once off $25 cost to get the evoscan scanning software which then comes with free updates via email

Well is what it says on the limitless site:
http://www.evoscan.com/mitsubishi-subaru-nissan-toyota-mazda-holden-honda-gm-obd2-can-cables
""EF" is for EcuFlash Reflashing.. The price of EcuFlash is included in the Cable which is why the ecuflash cables are more expensive (OpenPort 1.3U is $40 more expensive, and OpenPort 2.0 is $91 more expensive) Download a copy of ECUFlash here (ECUFlash is used for editing fuel and timing maps and other ecu settings)"

"This cable is really an OpenPort 1.3U cable but without the $40 license it costs to use EcuFlash. You can use this cable for full datalogging capabilities, but it has one more advantage than EvoScan 1.3D cable, and that is that you can use this cable with EvoScan for Reflashing Evo7, 8, or 9."
The OpenPort 2.0 doesn't really see any much cheaper from Taxtrix as opposed to limitless, $169 USD vs $189 AUD .. so given they made ecuflash youd think theyd be the ones charging the extra? Shrug either way for the OP.. 1.3D is fine and $40 cheaper if you don't care about reflashing.

"1.3M is an old cable by tactrix that is mitsubishi only. now replaced by 1.3U (subaru and mitsubshi) has a $40 serial license included for use with ecuflash software. (yep you didn't really think ecuflash was free software did you :)
1.3R is technically and functionally the same as 1.3U, except without the ecuflash $40 license, and will not be recognised by ecuflash.. but those with a version of ecuflash(can map edit), and then use evoscan for reflashing evo7/8/9 (these specific vehicles). then the 1.3R is a good cheaper option"

Mate your getting ecuFLASH (which is openECU) and evoscans version of reflashing mixed up, they are 2 different things. One is pure reflashing software (openECU/ecuflash) and the other is a datalogging/scanning software which also has limited model reflash software (evoscan).
OpenECU (which is known as ecuFLASH) is NOT evoscan.
ecuFLASH is FREE software direct from openECU/tactrix BUT to use it you need a cable which can be purchased from either Tactrix OR limitless NZ. As i have said, myself and lots of others that use openECU have never been charged for a "licence" fee for the ecu reflashing only software
evoscan (datadlogging) is ONLY available from Limitless NZ which cost $25 USD once purchased will have free updates. evoscan can be "glitchy" at times as well when using it.
Have you personally used both of them? If you have, you will know they are different softwares for different jobs but they both work great when used togther. I reflash my cars with ecuFLASh but monitor them with evoscan (mode23 on my X and MUT over obd on my magna)

I am fully aware of the difference between the two, at what point did I get confused?
OP wants to use evoscan, I said cable without ecuflash is fine for him? Which it is. 1.3D is fine. Works with evoscan for datalogging as he requires.
If he wants to use ecuflash, then he would need one of the more expensive cables (i.e. 1.3U) with an ecuflash license. Which I was pointing out carries a $40 premium. But he doesn't, so no need. Hence, again, 1.3D is fine?
Lost as to the confusion, I was merely clarifying the price difference between the cables and that the 1.3D is fine for the OP.
To re-cap, all cables support evoscan for datalogging
1.3D
1.3U
2.0
1.3U and 2.0 also support ecuflash for ECU reflashing
to complicate matters further the 1.3D does support reflashing within evoscan but that only supports evo 7,8,9. ecuflash supports alot more mitsu & also subaru vehicles.
1.3D is basically the same as the 1.3U but is $40 cheaper as you don't pay for reflashing support - 2.0 is more expensive because it does more (CAN support, etc)

You said in a earlier post the cable came with a $40 ecuflash/openECU licence thats what i was referring to lol. ecuFLASH doesnt have any licencing fees. IF you have a cable that has all the required pins/chipset to reflash then its a free download off the net.
You have now corectly stated that the cable is $40 dearer, that cost is due to there being more pins used/different chipset within the cable to allow reflashing.
I'm just after reading, no way am I anywhere near competent/brave/stupid enough to try and flash the ECU myself. That's what SKR is for. That's for the feedback guys (goes off to find his internet purchasing card).
