Hi guys,
Just wanting to know how hard it is to change the cvs in the second gens, I've had a few mechanics quote around $300 to do it, roughly what has everyone else paid to get them done, or is it easy enough to get the parts and do it myself? Any advice would be great. Cheers

Easy to do yourself, and much cheaper.

The first time is always the hardest!

Download the appropriate manual and search this forum - truckloads of info available here.

If you have a good meck and a good price go with that!
Its a simple job with the right tools but can be a bitch if you dont know whats going on.
as they last over 100,000 k's its unlikely you will do them again in an older car so the lesson you will learn doing it your self will have no benefit after you buy a couple of tools and break your knuckles!..lol

Once you have a price you can then compare with tools you have and the out come, eg mech one day , yourself may take 2 or 3 depending on experience

Good luck.

i got mine for 220 for the set, so for the 80 bucks i would just pay someone to do it. At the time i was quoted 450, which had me saving 200 to do it myself, so i got together with a slab and did springs, cv/s, struts and bushings over a weekend...save me ever having to go under there again ahha

You can do it yourself however there are a few things to think of

How much is your time worth doing other things
Do you have the appropiate tooling to lift the car safely and support the car
Do you have the appropoate tooling to remove the 32mm shaft nut and then tighten afterwards correctly
Do you have the means to remove the joint correctly from the trans and the extension shaft
Are you able to properly top up the trans post install

These are a few things to consider, also the fleabay shafts are often very cheap and it is not always worth the saving when you have to pull them back out if a few months later as they are vibrating like pigs
