View Full Version : Fog Light Wiring Q's (I know theres heaps of posts about it)

I have done a thorough search of the forums looking up search terms like fog lights + fog light wiring + fog light dash indicator and what not.
I've found some useful posts but some of them do not answer my final question. I am a beginner when it comes to electrics but not too much of a beginner.
I have a couple of questions if anyones done it.
I have a TE Magna Altera. A set of fog lights and a factory stalk with the fog light switch on it.
I know you can wire the fog lights up to the fuse box.
But i'm stuck with the how to on the fog light stalk switch.
How do you wire that to make the fog lights work.
Also How do you wire it so the light saying your fog lights are on, switch on?
Ive had a look and cant find much info about it. If there is anyone whos done this and can explain it please?

ok so you got a factory stalk with the fog light switch on it and you want it to show it on the dash board when it is on.
In all seriousness its alot of hassle
I would just go with a basic switch, if you don't know much about the car's electrics.

You see I'm not going to be doing most of the work on it my old man whos pretty skilled with this stuff will be, but he doenst know his way around a mitsu..? if that makes any sense

Yeah I've looked at the factory wiring guide i was wondering if the TH/TE were different to each other in that respect....

Mate, I think you will find that with your car the internal wiring may actually be there, the best way to tell is to remove the black steering wheel surround, you will find a plug with some very thin wires that is not actually part of the switch body but is hanging off the switch (bit hard to explain) If you have 3 wires on this plug on your car harness then you have no internal wiring. If you have I think it is 5 then you will have the internal wiring needed

Ok Well I'll check that part out...
If annese takes the photos can we put it in the DIY section?

First take of the cover behind the steering wheel, theres 3 screws underneath, then it simply clips off.

This is the wiring you need to do under the fuse box in the engine bay
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k21/aannese/fuseboxwiring.jpg
After this, you just need a relay and fuse to put in the fog light positions in the fuse box and you should have the fogs working like they came from factory...

Ok so if theres five wires in the stalk plug, do i have to tap those green and brown wires?

I'm not entirely sure, but at a guess i'd say no, the wiring should already be running into the fusebox however you may need to run the two wires from the fusebox to the actual foglights (and then earth them) and maybe get a relay and fuse...

Annese,
Thanks for the great pics.
One question, What type of connectors go into the base of the relay box? ie are they standard spade type?

Excellent instructions there and will help me alot. Does this mean that the indicator light in the instrument cluster will also work when the fog lights are on?

I didn't use any connectors lol, the wire I used was thick enough that I just stripped about 1cm on the end and twisted it and shoved it in there and its wedged in there quite firmly...

Unfortunately not, im sure there's a way to do this but it doesn't really bother me

OK fair enough I understand and tried, but nothing happened. I'm guessing the wires didnt reach the connecting points properly for the fuse and the relay....

I connected my tj adv up today. The dash harness had the 5 wires but the engine bay harness didn't. I just ran new wiring from switch to relay box.
I found that the connectors under the relay box are non standard and exceptionally deep. To make good solid connections, I made up connectors by stripping about 2.5cm of insulation off each wire, an using solder to tin the exposed wire. The first cm needs to be flat so you can create a spade connection about 4mm wide. I had to flatten and shape each one using a hammer and sand paper. It's trial and error but you know when it's in solid. It has to go in the full exposed length. And I actually tapped into the tail light circuit by shaving off some insulation and grafting on a wire as opposed to jamming a second wire into the hole. Hope this is helpful.

Ok weird question how thick would you say the wire is you were using?

Switch wire was 2.5mm 5amp. Fog light wire was 4mm 15amp. All earth wires were 15amp. Wires I used were greater than the factory wires. The 4mm was easier to manufacture connections. A bit more solder needed for the thinner wire.

where was the engine bay harness?
i have hooked up the stalk and its switching earth like its supposed to but at the relay box there is only one feed which is the battery.
also does anyone know how to take apart the fuse/relay box under the bonnet?

only the sports and verada with factory fitted fog lights have wiring form the engine harness, you have to run a wire from where the wire from the switch terminates at plug B73 (drivers RHS), or easier to run a wire from the switch to your relay.
If you want to have a fog light indicator on your instrument cluster you need a verada or sports cluster as all the rest are blanked off, or swap the fog light indicator from a sports / verada with light globe as the wiring is all there.

Thought I could follow these instructions with the factory stalk but bypassing the fuse box and using an aftermarket relay. (narva) As per the instructions, I grounded the brown wire at the stalk and ran a wire from the green wire at the stalk to switch the relay. Relay has power and earth connected, however, relay won't switch when I turn on the fog lights on the stalk. I have:
- Green from stalk to 86 of relay
- Brown from stalk to ground in drivers footwell area
- Power direct from battery to 30
- Earth to body in engine bay from 85
- I don't have anything connected to 87 as yet.
I just wanted to make sure the relay was switching before I connected the fogs, but no such luck. Am travelling to Brisy on Saturday and really wanted these working.
What have I missed?

Any ideas on this? Do you have to have the foggies connected to 87 before the relay will work??

30 to battery like you did but make sure its fused. 87 to fogs. 85 to the switch. 86 to the power from park lights.
Hope that helps?

Thanks Nick. I am a bit confused as to whether the 85/86 connectors go to switch and earth or switch and power (park lights). I think using the original stalk may have an impact on this?

Thats correct. the stalk simply earths the circuit making it work.

not meaning to bring up an old thread, but the instructions are great just installed KJ Verada foggies on my TH wagon :woot: i ended up going to my local steal a part and got the conections from under the fuse box for all the wiring as bunnings, super expensive and rip off co didn't have the right ones, very easy job took all of 20min, i had to screw in the foggies to the bumper cause i didnt have the right bracket, but cant see the screws at all and shes snug.
Thanks for tut
