Evening, first post here, and first magna I've owned. Liking it so far, but a few things to sort out with the dodgy used car dealer.....

Anywho, I got a new head unit (akai cd/mp3 thing) and now the front speakers in the dash are starting to annoy me (rattling sounds). What options do I have to replace them? any recomendations on speakers that will fit??

In addition, I have considered getting some rear speakers put in, but I was at strathfield car radios (I got the head unit installed by them) and they refused to do it, and I'm wondering if it is possible.

FYI, I was happy with the stock 4 speaker system in my womans excel, so I'm not really looking for something that's gonna blow the windows out. If it's cheap and does the job, then I'm happy.

Hey Mate

Welcome mate, just let you know that i have put new speakers in the front of my TS and it was not to easy. the magnet on the stock speakers are VERY small, so when you get new ones the margnets are larger and do not fit. thats when you have to do a little cutting.
i have also installed 6x9's in the back of my wagon.

if you need some more info PM me

cheers

Yer, I figured as much. The guy at strathfeild didn't seem too keen on doing it, but I was hoping that someone could recomend something that would bolt straight in.

I've installed a few car stereo's, and I absolutely hate it, so I wanna get some other sucker to pull the dash out. That way if he stuffs it up, it's his problem :P

I'm gonna scour a few wreckers tho, and hopefully I can find some stock rear speakers and skins for it, so if all goes well, that'll be a simple change-over and I'll get them to wire it up when I get new front speakers put in.

hey i think the front's are just a straight swap
and the dash don't need to be removed if you're just replacing the 4" in the dash
the covers clip off, just get something sharp and pointy and pull em out.
dunno about cutting, but i think the kicker 4" (90W???) are a straight slide in.
not too sure on that tho, you'd have to check
as for rears, my mate has a TS wagon and he has mounted 6x9's in the rear side panels.
so it's just a matter of finding out how the rear panels come off, and cutting the hole for the speaker to line up with the gaps in the metal.
If you want 6" in the doors, all you need to do is take off the map holders, cut the hole and run the wire. They fit. (did in my TR)
good luck!!

Kicker? is that a particular brand?

Oh, and I'd rather get factory speakers and skins for the rear out of another car if I can. My skills are enough to make something work damn well (it won't break) but not enough to make it pretty.

G'day mate, welcome to the forums :) Go the wagons! :D

You've got an Akai MP3/CD head unit? I didn't think they still made head units. My first head unit was an Akai with a stacker, but the stacker broke after a year and there was no distributor in Sydney i could take it to get fixed, so i practically chucked it away.

In regards to your front speakers, if you dont mind cutting away your door trims (or even someone else), then I'd suggest you to install some 6" (6.5" ?) speakers in the doors. It's not too difficult since the door was made to have a speaker mounted to it (ie. the Verada models), and it woud be extremely hard to find decent 4" speakers that will fit into the stock locations without making the hole larger to fit bigger magnets.

But those grills in the front are easy to take off, use a small sized flat head screw driver and pry the grill up.

As for your rear speakers, there are a few ways you can do that. The factory locations for the rear speakers in wagons is on the roof, right at the back, you will see two indents on either side, thats where they go. However I have never been keen to cut up the carpet up there.

Others have mounted on the side panels and it seems to work. I have actually mounted my 6x9's in 25 litre boxes. It is more unsecure though because people somehow think they are sub's (bah!), but i've got a security blind so its all good. In the end I can sell the car almost stock looking.

I have to admit, I'm not very impressed with this akai head unit. It plays everything fine, but after a while it gets VERY hot, and then starts having trouble reading cd mp3's, and starts skipping like crazy. I'm gonna have to take it back to see what can be done. I haven't tried it on a normal cd yet, but either way it's irrelevant.

well in car audio you can't save money and havea great system , everything from the source unit has to be of a decent build quality. and akai i never knew they were still doing stuff!

anyway
for tr/ts 6", 6.5" both fit
but some speakers have the plastic holder where the grill sits on and that wont be able to fit as the gap is a little bit under 6.5" (my pioneer never fitted in the front) and so does my 5 1/4 but then i did pods ! which seriously if you are really keen then do it, if you are like me you will take 6 months to finish it!

Heh, no, I'm not like you. As I said in my initial post, I only want to raise it to the same level that was in the excel that we traded for this one. 4 basic speakers, jobs done. The only subwoofer that will go in the back of my car will be this one: http://rickbishop.ozdw.com/dog/mutt08.JPG

The fronts are 4" and are pretty easy to replace. I used a long broad flat head screw driver to release the covers, added 4" Sony's and some OFC speaker wire and then a 90 degree stubby screw driver to screw them in. I then slipped the covers back in on a shallow angle.

I added 6X9's in the stock roof mounting on mine. I do NOT recommend you do this as it sounds crap.

Got a part number or model number on those by chance? I know it's been a while, but I haven't had a chance to do anything......

are you sure they fitted straight in? The pioneer specs state a mounting depth of 43mm but the stock speakers are only 30mm.

Well Straths installed mine, when i took them out there was no cutting of the air vent, so this leads me to believe they were fitting in without problems

Well, after much procrastinating, I finally got new 4" pioneers installed. There was a bit of cutting involved, but not as much as I thought, and then they slotted straight in.

Sorted!!
