Hi guys i have a 99 tf and i have a query for you. ill soon be in the process of re painting all the interior plastics due to them being quite scratched and such, areas such as main console and the area near the gear selector. I have an automatic and where the different gears are listed as in P R N D 3 2 1 there is a plastic covering over it which is very dirty underneath. Is there a way in which i can remove it to clean it ? It seems very flimsy and i dont want it to shatter or something.

cheers!

It can be done. You need to remove the surrounding console which is just clipped in (the bit with the cupholders) to access the area you need to clean. Try searching for console removal for 3rd Gen and it will have what to do in more detail.

The surrounding lower-console (flat panel around gearshift) clips out - lift from the rear first (pull in the oddment bin and at rear edge of gearshift opening), and hinge the rear upwards.

Then pull the lower-console backwards to release some plastic tabs under the ashtray panel. Lift the console panel away.

You will then have to assess how the gear selector panel is attached - there can be a few ways (different models over the years). Just have a look, try to work it out and go fairly gently. (I have only attacked tiptronic cars, so unsure how the std auto panel is mounted).

If you want to pull the inidcator panel (P,R,N,D etc) out and apart, best to search these forums.... as you will have to remove the gear selector knob to get that panel off the stick. Again, the knob can be attached a variety of ways, and there have been good Threads in here with Pics showing the way.

I can be a pain searching through lots of Search results, but Search really is your friend.
