View Full Version : Remote controlled engine start
I've seen this fitted on some cars in Asia as an after-market modification and always assumed it must be illegal over here as I've never seen a car with it. Was just browsing the Rhino car alarm website and was surprised to see they now have a car alarm with precisely this feature - http://www.rhinoco.com.au/?p=product_info&id=1630
Seems it can be had for under $200 on ebay. Would love to upgrade my car alarm to this but I know its not going to be easy as my magna ('03 TL LS) has the immobiliser which requires the transponder embedded in the key to be closeby for it allow starting. I guess this could be circumvented but I'm sure it wont be easy unless I had exact wiring diagrams.
Anyway, has anyone fitted remote controlled start to their car? What state do you live in and is it legal there?
Cheers,
Aj

You will need a spare key. this will stay in the car in a hidden location and the alarm will have its own immobilizer setup. Most alarm makers will have a part no. for what you need wiring wise.

Just careful if you have a manual, make sure it has a neutral inhibitor and you wire it up! If its an auto then I'm pretty sure all Magnas won't start anyway.
Also I hear that you should look for ones with some sensors such as RPM or oil pressure to sense when the car starts properly - otherwise the more simple ones just work on a timer for the starter motor which is less than ideal.

he means if u had a manual make sure the imobiliser has a neutral switch (only allows car to start in neutral)
ures being auto the inhibitor switch does this anyway and will only allow the car to start in park and or neutral

Yep, you're right - mostly. I asked Rhino & had the following reply:
The RSA Alarm is an older product that we no longer make or sell to our stockists. We do still have a few units here in our warehouse and I could sell you one for $279 including GST. Postage on that alarm would cost $14.30, by Express Post, to anywhere in the country.
The RSA has not been replaced by another alarm with a remote start feature. These models didn't tend to sell very well due to the fact that, in most states in Australia, starting a car's engine when you're not sitting in the drivers seat is illegal, so not too many installers would carry them.
Anyone know which states its actually legal in?

when i had my 180sx i was told they are only legal in automatics in qld, and i had a manual I brought a 5xx Viper alarm system and no one would install it, autobarn said they would if it was auto and i had to pay extra. I eventually found an auto elecy at moorooka (west brisbane) who are fantastic sparkies by the way, who did the install and made sure i had the inhibitor installed to prevent cranking unless in neutrel.
The alarm i had worked a treat, i could choose the setting i wanted for the starter cutoff oil, rpm, timer. I really couldnt fault it. It was one of the first viper alrms with the 2way pagers, remote start, and the remote start worked from up to 500m line of sight. If anyone knows ipswich, i started my car from booval maccas when it was parked in the back carpark of the pub i worked at about 300m down the road booval shopping centre.
As said the idea to warm the car up is the reason i had it wired up, but wasnt the reason i brought the alarm; insurance cover was
