View Full Version : TJ Centre Display with 'Pooter

Okies Folks,

Here's the deal. I have a KJ Series I, has Centre Display with Trip Computer Read-out and Clock. Really like it, the trip display is large and up high near sight-lines while driving - I think its safer.
I also have a TJ Sports Series II - the trip computer display is in the Cluster, tiny dim LCD mounted low - I think this is poo and more dangerous to view.

I have wondered about "cloning" the trip display from the Cluster up to a Centre Display unit........ my QUESTION tho, is the Display JUST a display panel, or is the Trip Computer built-in to that unit?

If the trip pooter "brains" are part of that Centre Display unit, that'd mean my goal to "clone" wouldn't work - I'd be leaving a trip computer in the dash, and adding another one in a Centre Display panel - and then hoping to control them both through one set of Mode/Up/Down buttons on the bezel. (What if they get out of synch, etc?)

Had a look at the wiring diagrams, they don't reveal to me what the Centre Display panel actually contains (is it just the LCD driver for display, or is the trip computer in there too?).

My parents have a TJ Exec (I) with trip display above the Centre Vents - its speed alarm is quite loud, my TJ Sports with trip display in the cluster is more muffled - that's what has me beginning to think my "clone" plan may have issues.

So far I have a trip display spare, and am bidding on a trip display/clock in EBay, and I have a spare bit of loom to connect to those displays. But hoping someone has better insight into this than I do.......

My understanding of this was that there were many different types of centre display units, some being just warning lights (like my MY02 advance), clock and trip or just clock and lights. I think you would have to get a T\KJ series one display that has the trip as well and may have to do some harness modding to make it work like your verada one. As for duplicating the outputs in both the cluster and the centre stack, I'm not sure, maybe some creative wiring? Although it maybe the case with the MY02 TJ's that have the trip info in the cluster that the odo is integrated somehow? My speed alarm is a bit muffled the once or twice I heard it, I've set it to 195km\h now so it doesn't annoy me haha

Maybe Mal can shed some light on it as he's been playing around with these lately.

You know you can just turn it off :P

You can? :ninja: maybe I should read the manual that I got with the car to see how to :woot:

Thanks so far! My plan was to patch into the loom going to cluster for all the wires that relate to a "centre-display" trip read-out - and have the loom and connector to do that. My TJ II Sports centre display is only a few wires for warning lights and that's it... the unit with the trip display is a double-row connector of about 12 pins, if memory serves.

I had a bit of a glance at wiring diagrams, tho..... and there's quite a few wires involved (plus where they are coming from) which is suggesting to me that the actual trip computer might be in the display unit (on older models) or in the cluster (on TJ II). For example, I think one wire goes back towards No 1 Injector - so I am guessing that is how Trip Computer calculates fuel-consumption etc etc.

To be honest I can see no reason why you can not just patch into the relevant wires and replicate above the vents what you have in the dash cluster

Or better still, get a s1 cluster and move it

Personally I would prefer the cluster one out of a sII kj blackout in some ways however then you have the conundrum of how to fill that space above the vents as it looks bare with only 2 warning lights

The SI and SII are totally different looms so if you want to do a total change over, it is dash out jobby if you want to do it properly

Thanks Mal. I quite like the red-lit dials in the TJ II Sports cluster - plus I've only just "red LED'd" my air-con unit to match the cluster! I have the blackout "lite-show" cluster in the KJ anyway.

I'll probably persist, then - and try to clone out of the cluster loom to the centre-display (hoping to also score one with a clock - EBay finishes tomorrow) - and see how I go.

I have the parts I need - just need to carefully study the wiring diagrams for each relevant model and try to patch it in correctly. This won't be done for a while yet, I'd say.

hold the up and down buttons for a couple of seconds, from memory :D

The computer is part of the display. If you unplug the display the computer gets reset.

It is possible to do, however quite time consuming and involves splicing into the dash harness (a dash-out job really). Best course of action would be to go to the wreckers, cut the trip meter harness off a TH/TJ1 and splice it in to your TJ2 harness. You will still have your trip meter in the cluster as well, however it should not be out of sync as when its reset they will both reset at the same time. One thing I am not sure of is wire colours, the wire colouring may have changed between TJ1/2 and this could be problematic for splicing into the TJ2 harness. Also I would recommend using a verada trip meter unit as it also has a clock, more useful :)

Thanks Dean, gasHed and all others. I have raped a wreck at Pick-n-Payless and have the loom. Have a centre trip-display unit (via CrackerJnr) and hoping to upsize that to a clock version from Ebay (tho I am at work and may have been outbid as the auction closes).

Have the Workshop manuals from these forums (or lisho.net) so can send my head silly looking at wiring plans for different series - that is why this will take me a while to complete!

So I will try to clone out of dash harness across to the centre display area, and will leave the original plug there for warning lights in case I go back to standard....... but wire up the bigger plug and hope it works out!!

Will post results win/fail when I get into it!

I have a spare trip display with clock if the ebay one falls through.

Let me know if you are interested.
