For anyone wanting to fit a rear spoiler. I bought this on ebay. Its a VE SV6 spoiler which fits perfectly.
Just need to get it sprayed next week.

no, dude theres no way hed fit it if that were the case... couldnt open the boot... even if you dont use it often being able to open the boot for spare etc is essential. will admit that pic does look like it is, think its just the angle though

No its on the bootlid, perfect fit. Will look better when sprayed I think.

You will find that in a genuine mitsi kit there is a reinforcing bracket that has to be pop riveted in.
It stops the whole lid from flexing.
The commodore one will be completely different.

Bugga
When the spray shop got it they wouldnt fit it as the fixing holes on the spoiler lined up midway between the boot frame and the outerlip.
It looked a perfect fit from on top.
So I'm still on the lookout for a VRX spoiler

If you want to keep the spoiler then chop it in half, shorten it and then join it back. Panel beaters should be able to do this. Then again, is it worth the cost? hmmmm..........

Personally I think you should cut your losses and purchase the genuine Mitsubishi spoiler.
Apart from looking better than the Holden spoiler it comes with a fitting kit. The kit reinforces the under side of the boot lid with hardened steal brackets that brace the wing back to the boot reinforcing not just the boot skin.
The Mitsubishi wing is also reasonably priced although I do not have the exact number at hand.
If you want a picture of the brackets I can arrange this.

Take a deep breath and a reinforced cheque book too I would imagine. I reckon the later model towel rails look far better than the series 1 VRX boot lid spoiler. That doesnt do too much for me at all.

Still undecided about a rear spoiler on my GT. Got my power window fixed today and checked with parts dept for availability and price for a "genuine" VRX spoiler. $220 primed.
Anyone fitted one or. has one on a GT. I just sometimes feel the rear needs 'something'
Just a personal opinion
I agree it may look overdone or too busy

I may be the odd man out here but I actually like the series 3 towel rail on the rear more than the lid spoiler on my series 1 VRX, but it's all just personal taste. If you like it, that is all that counts. (unless of course it is ricey!! ha ha ha)

Just do it, it looks fine, in fact a bit unique.
The lip spoiler isn't enough on its own on the GT.

you want me to prove the laws of physics to you?
I'll give an example instead... British Touring Car Championship. something like 80% of the cars in it are FWD (Civics, SEATs, Vectras, Lacettis). they ALL have rear spoilers on. do you think they would have rear spoilers if it didn't provide downforce over the rear wheels and help with stabilising the car at speed?
why would they carry the additional weight and drag if it didn't help?

They work, but only at speed. The speed at which they work is the speed they like to take your licence off you!!! Soooo it is largely cosmetic regardless of whether it works or not. Call it a draw and move on.

I was under the impression that in a FWD car with rear spoiler, the transfer of weight to the rear causes a reduction of drive traction and steering control at high speed.
So the faster we go, the less traction and hence steering control.

sure, in theory you are correct. in practice, those cars also have other aerodynamic aids (front splitters, under car aids) to provide the necessary downforce over the front axle. obviously the rear wing does load up the rear axle, but the suspension is setup to accommodate this (i.e. not allow too much weight transfer away from the driving wheels).
of course, we are talking about speeds over 150km/h. spoilers on road cars which never reach those speeds are purely cosmetic, regardless of which wheels are doing the driving.

Just continuing the spoiler thread, I've currently got the lip spoiler (which BTW are now starting to lift at the ends like everyone else's). After changing to 18 inch wheels, the car looks like it would really benefit from having the high profile spoilers instead.
Talking to the dealer over the phone, they really didn't know if they could fit the lip with the high prof at the same time. Anybody seen this attempted before, and do people think it would look as daggy/overdone as a VRX tail with high profile spoilers?

Yeah, I saw that but post 25 has the spoiler all the way through as per VRX models. Platinum models don't have it all the way - it's a much smaller profile than that. It's small enough that I don't have the VRX tail lights. I've included a pic of my car below, before it was rear-ended by some Brisbanite. Anyway, so far I've got one person saying it's overdone.

If you have the same lip spoiler as me, it does not integrate with the tail lights at all - and you don't have the differently-shaped VRX tail lights either. So with or without your current spoiler, would be okay regardless of the tail lights.

I would, except as it stands in order to get into my garage the front JUST lip clears the driveway on entry (about 2mm). And that's at a snail paced 1/2 a cm per second at the crucial point. Any faster and I get the sound of sandpaper on plastic, though it feels more like fingernails on blackboard.

Admittedly, one of the things that concerns me is that the lip spoiler has the integrated LED lights so I fear that removing the spoiler will cost more than I'd like to pay for. Anyway, looks like this thread's given me as much advice as I'm ever gonna get so I'll make my decision based on the implications of removing the lip. Can't be as bad as the VRX w/ high profiles given the lip's barely noticeable now could it?

Removing the lip spoiler would be opening a whole can of worms. You would have to fill holes and respray the boot lid I think. Much easier to leave it there.

Just resurrecting an old thread here -
I've got a blue series 3 SX - i.e. regular ugly lights, no spoiler. I found cheap on ebay some series 2 vrx tail-lights and a black boot with boot lid spoiler.
My question is: what would the process be like in removing the spoiler off the black boot and putting it on the blue boot? there only appear to be 4 holes, 2 of them for bolts.
Just trying to dodge paying for the painting of the black boot, which could be a fair amount. I'll throw on the black boot, either it will look like a carbon fibre boot, or it will look like i've been to the panel-beaters... :)

Shouldn't be hard to do.
My Series 3 VRX boot lid spoiler was fitted in the car park in the dark at an SA meet about 18 months ago.
I had a factory kit with brackets, bolts, templates & fitting instructions etc.
You need to cut four holes not two in the underside of the boot lid, two for each side.
One 19mm and one 16mm hole each side, with the 19mm hole above the 16mm hole.
Then you need to drill four holes in the top side of the boot lid, two each side, 7.5mm on top and 9mm below.
Problem is it would be much easier with the marking templates that come with the factory installation kit, two for the top and two for the underside, which show you exactly where to drill all the holes. My templates were ruined by the installation and they are long gone, but I still have the fitting instructions booklet.
Maybe you could make up those templates from the black boot lid, after you have removed the wing?
You also need to drill four more small holes in the underside near the mounting brackets, two each side, for bracing rivets. But I didn't get any rivets in my kit, so I used tek screws which did just as good a job if not better.
So I reckon you could do it, just take good note of exactly how the existing wing is fitted, and figure out some way of making up templates to mark the right spots to drill.
KJ.
Do you mean the lights with the lip spoiler?
Michiel

I think using the black boot would be the way to go as far as the template is concerned, that's a good idea
I should be able to scavenge the mounting brackets from the back bootlid shouldn't i?
I'll see how it looks with the black boot, as that would be 1.432x10^534324234 times easier, but i'll probably end up with the proper coloured boot. any insights on making the spoiler blue? It's plastic isnt it, so i don't think it would be painted in the same way the rest of the body of the car would be. Hopefully it doesnt look too dopey black on the blue
thanks for that KJ

Duly ignored :)
However i can probably use a few of those techniques ie using older one as a template. Will tackle it after exams most likely, shall post results
Just regarding lip spoiler vs wing spoiler, i don't mind the looks of the wing, but i really like how the bootlid spoiler complements the lines of the car, i think it keeps it looking pretty sleek. I like how it has the forward looking stance, and that the rear windows are smaller and not squared off at the bottom

cheers! yeah it's from a stealth coloured 380. I bought the tails and boot/spoiler off ebay off the member 'life' (white magna) and his dad. I'm a little unsure of it, i.e. it feels a little ricerish (like i'm playing need for speed udnerground!), but then again i like the unique value of it. ahh that was my only apprehension lol. If i wanted to be really bad i could wrap it in 3M di noc carbon fibre vinyl...
ohk, the guys name was Joel from near campbelltown, and i didnt catch the sons name but he said his name was 'life' on the forum. ah well

It's moreso trying to pass my boot off as carbon fibre lol

The best way to mock carbon fibre is to paint it matt black, VERY carefully wrap in fly screen, spray silver, unwrap and spray clear gloss.
I have seen some suspension wishbones on a historic open wheel single seater that were so real the scrutineers had to be convinced with a magnet. It looked like C/F to me, the owner said it took a bit of practice to get right but he loved the comments he overheard like "this guy must have spent a fortune getting C/F parts specially made for a car this old". Whatever rocks your boat!!!
