I noticed yesterday when i was driving back from marion going back down south and i noticed alot of smoke coming from under the bonnet so i pulled into the service station pop the hood and sure enough it was alot of smoke. was coming from the back of my engine.

I had an even better look and there is oil leeking from the back of my engine and its running all over my exhaust manifold.

just wondering if any one would know wat the problem is???

Check your rocker cover seals.

Run a tissue/rag along the seal. There's plenty of threads in this section on this, including how to change etc :)

If there's too much crap for you to see exactly where its leaking from, clean that area (degreaser works well). Go for a short drive, and then inspect again.

Also, when was your timing belt last done and were the crank and cam seals done at the same time? These are also prone to leaking. All of these are easy fixes, so don't get too worried.

if it is your cam or crank seals you will se a puddle under the car on the drivers side, but this is unlikely as the timing case is fairly well sealed and oil would probs not manage to reach the exhuast manifold AFAIK. also, when was the last time you changed you oil? when i changed my oil the first time, i went from valvoline 15-40 to castrol of the same weight, and withing 1000 kms, my crank seal went, and when i say it went, it used 2lts of oil on a 40km round trip to go in and get a new seal. thats why once you pick an oil, you have to stay with it.

now i have used castrol 10w60 for 25,000 k's its good stuff. not first start rattle etc.

well i recently got the new second hand engine put it and only had done 102,000km on it so they replaced new sparks spark leads and oils time belt everything.

well i tried getting pics but to much stuff in the way and i checked my oil just then and i have the same amount of oil that was in there yesterday and its leeking on the side where my trans is. just wondering if it could b the power steering???

but i also put a wag down there to try discover the colour of the oil and i had some red fliud which does indicate the trans oil.

but that would drip onto the exhaust manifold would it???

rocker cover gaskets... do front and rear..

and if it was me id do the spark plug tube seals while your there.. you can buy a single kit to do all of that....

Red oil? The ATF dipstick isn't loose or something is it?

Red fluid could be your high pressure side of your power steering pump leaking and spraying oil up and onto the manifold

If is engine oil, could be rocker cover gaskets but also could be the cam seal especially if the breathers are blocked, the oil gets forced out, sprays up and then runs down, follows along the head onto the exhaust. I have seen this many times when people have done rocker cover seals and still have issues, bring it to me and the breathers are all blocked thus the cam seals have blown them selves to bits being the weakest part of the system

Surprisingly (I freak out every time I change the oil) the genuine Mitsubishi motor oil is GREEN and standard motor oil is generally a golden colour so if the fluid is red it's more than likely tranny fluid.

To check if it's a power steering leak though, get someone to turn the wheel while you have a look at the pump and hoses.

yer i just had a look again at the motor oil and again its the same but i also checked my power steering oil and sure enough there is only a tiny bit left so i am ashuming thats the problem.

how would i go on fixing this porblem myself or it would be so hard for me to do it myself

Depends where the power steering is leaking from - can you track it down? Im sure Madmagna will know the common area's these leak from.

kk i just had a mate came over and look at my car and he is saying it is the trans sensor just above the exhaust manifold, there is like a groove next it the plug which is even closer to the manifold and that groove is filled up with tranny fluid as well as the sensor is moist as well.

just wondering if thats possible and where could i get a new one if its the problem?

shouldn't need a new sensor maybe just some teflon tape... be might my first shot
