Hi guys
Just noticed a curious quirk/flaw/issue with my TJ2 5 speed tippy. It seems I can "confuse" or "catch out" invecs in the following scenario:
- Whilst in drive and cruising along anywhere between 60-90kmh I floor the accelerator for no more than 1 second
- This results in the box jumping down a gear
- I then immediately lift my foot off for maybe half a second
- I then apply 1/3 or half throttle and the box is caught out and revs freely in neutral.
I assume I'm catching the box as its going from 3rd/4th back to 4th/5th respectfully. Has anyone else experienced this?
Box is due for a flush next service and I'll reset the ECU.

Happens with pretty much all auto gearboxes in my experience.
Mine does that - while cruising, if I plant it and lift off the free rev happens and people must think I'm a hoon.
Most auto's that I've driven will start accelerating in current gear and then shift down when the box realises that it needs to, but I'm guessing in this car, the TPS tells the box a lot sooner than the traditional method.
What really peeves me with Automatics is when you need about 1/2 throttle in third but the box shifts up, so you put your foot down a little more to cause the kick back to 3rd, but then it's too much throttle so you lift up and it shifts to 4th - stupid slush boxes. I wish I had a manual! :)

The software protects teh gearbox in some situations. Going from full throttle/ lots of traction to low throttle and teh box thinking it's time to change is one of them.
The software will prevent the box shifting or delay doing anything if it is unsure what YOU, the driver, intend to do next. I've had teh TW do this the odd time, say if I am going to overtake a car, give it full throttle, it kicks down then I abort the overtake.
Regards, Andrew.

Meh I just use tiptronic whenever I drive, unless I'm eating a cheeseburger the standard auto is useless.
I'm still getting used to the engine - if I use triptronic and get a bit too keen, I spend too long bouncing off the rev limiter because the shifts aren't instant, it's got so much lag compared to a manual that I think it would be quicker in "D". I'll test this out one day if I get to WSID on a Wednesday night :)

i find my KE 4speed (no tippy) is perfect. it changes down as i brake, no kicks. and if im on a hill it will hold the gear im in even if i lift off the gas a bit instead of just changing up the instant i do, so you have to floor it again like most autos. its great if your stuck behind a truck. and coming into my road, it will always change down just before i need to floor it, after i pull into the road. its definitely the best auto ive driven. oh and i like how you can idle along in drive, or reverse. some ive driven (possibly worn, but changed fine), would not move until given the gas and felt like the revs didnt match the speed, if that makes sense (example; 95 mazda 626)

the gearbox responds from inputs of the throttle position and revs of engine so yeh this can happen as a lag response. fairly normal.

FOR THE NON-TECHNICALLY MINDED:
A little man lives inside the gearbox.
He is not very smart.
Too many inputs can confuse him.
Please be kind to the little man and give him only one thing to do, then give him plenty of time to move the cogs in the gearbox around.
THANK YOU.

I fiqured that.
Ever since i put a cooler on mine and flushed the tranny it shifts better and properly, but if i do something that it didnt expect then it will get confused.
I use my tippy for quick getaways and when the mood takes me, but around town and the highways it stays in drive.
Why do you call it 'tippy'? Isn't it a "triptronic" mode, which means you should be calling it "trippy" :)
I've decided to using manual for slowing down and D for accelerating 99% of the time.
I noticed that if you force it down a gear for mild engine braking, the instantaneous fuel consumption readout drops from ~2.7 to 0.1 L / 100km, so I'm hoping that will save a bit of fuel :)

Sounds just like me mate! I always use the tRippy [just for you oggy] to keep rev's below 2K's and have better fuel economy and control of the car. (I've been driving manual for 3 years and this is my 1st auto - still finding it hard to convert :P ). With chaning under 2K rev has gotten me about 9.5L-10L/100 here in the burbs with some freeway driving.
I find the Drive mode is quite challenging to keep the rev's down, you really have to be driving like a nanna with rheumatism. Its not bad but not great, GO the tippy!
The only I've found with the tranny is when I start the car in the mornings, there's a street I have to turn into to get to the mainroad, and if I'm in third before the turn the downchange to gear 2 is pure nasty - like someone just ripped the car by the front. I'm guessing its the fact that the engine/transmission is cold.

No. It is spelled "tiptronic"

with the gas milage dropping when you use the triptronic, my auto does the down change when i slow down to a stop every time, i can hardly feel it, but if i watch the revs you can see it go 3-2-1 when im cruising around town and it will always go to third if im going about 60km in 4th and come to a hill or even if the road begins to incline slightly. do the tiptronics do this in drive or is the program different? i know it depends how you drive with invecs. :eeek:
With my tiptronic, it does downshift when slowing down but it does it too late for engine braking. It's only good enough that if I decide to accelerate, it won't be struggling in a too high gear.
If you've got a trip computer, put it on instant fuel mileage and as you're slowing down to a stop, watch it - in my case when coasting along >50kph, it shows about 2.5L/100km. If I manually shift down a gear at 60, it starts to engine brake and drops to 0.1L/100km.
It makes me think the reason Autos get worse fuel economy to manuals is simply because the stupid torque converter is only locked when the engine speed is high, whereas a manual is direct drive.
It's like chinese whispers down the power train, and an auto box always screws up the message.
I'd love to make my AWD a manual. Maybe I should go buy a lotto ticket.

If i only floor it for a second, it doesnt really have time to lock into gear. and its just the gearbox slowing back down to the engine speed (i assume- makes sense to me).
Mine on the other hand, if i floor it for 5 seconds, then lift off, it really harshly drops to the next gear, then sits there as if to hold the speed and not roll away any faster as a normal auto would. it almost feels like you are tapping the brakes a little as it holds the gear.
