View Full Version : Gearbox Gone.?
Hay all
I started getting this wierd knock sound when i turned the vehicle right the mechanic looked at it and thought it might be a CV. I called today to see how its all going mechanic said no good the sound is coming from the diff. But the knocking sound got worse and worse quickly. I just had the box rebuilt. I blown my origional box up because i did a burnout this time no burnout. Im really pissed of about this. Ever since i replaced my standard clutch with an evo one ive had so many problems. The gearbox is obviously not strong enough. So im thinking of my options put a standard clutch in and repair my diff AGAIN. Or put an LSD unit in my box witch will cost a fortune. Cause i know either one Im not gonna blow my box up. My gearbox handled the standard clutch well heaps of burnouts shit like that nothing happened to it for a year. Evo clutch fitted lasted 1 month and 1 burnout lol. Then rebuilt box lasted another month no burnouts and a couple of fast shifts. So yeah what do people think im over spending money on this thing.
Thanks Kurt.

Take it back to the people who rebuilt your box and get them to fix it?

mate, your car must have been on its last legs if a tougher clutch is causing it to fall apart..
sooooo many guys here have put exedy HD clutches in there magnas (very close to what a stock evo clutch is) and have had no problems what so ever..
ive run a evo clutch in my magna for 1 year now totally trouble free... i dont thrash my cars though so that could be it..

Well i dont think a rebuilt gearbox box would be on its last legs.? How much more heavy duty is an evo clutch over a heavy duty magna clutch.?

Was there a warrantly on the gear box rebuild? Even if it doesnt take it to who ever fixed and get them to look at it. Its either their fault or your driving style mate. Might be time for an auto conversion lol
Whats a good brand for a stock standard clutch for a magna.?

exedy.
but the point is mate, a stock evo clutch is not that heavy... the evo clutch isnt breaking your car....

Its definatly apart of it.
Im really thinking about getting a quaife LSD unit. Anyone that has one of these were did u order and when u did order how long did it take to get to you.?

Not sure if thats true mate, been a lot of people running them. Some putting out a fair bit of power and still not breaking a box.

RPW sell them, no doubt find them cheaper elsewhere, maybe try finding a Ralliart box.

i personally doubt it.. its a pretty tame clutch in the scheme of things
tzaboy is running a cushioned button clutch with all that power he has and hasnt broken a box or diff..
wat oil are u running in ur box? the right oil??

ha good luck finding a ralli art box.
stick in a LSD, cusco like the ego has, he went to 3 diffs i think.
RPW also sells Kazz but i havnt heard much about them.
when you say rebuilt, define rebuilt. like brand new/second hand diff? or did they just stick in a new scnro and clutch?

Mate, I have a full man converstion for sale for less than the box is worth however having said that, if you have ripped apart 2 boxes with just an evo clutch either you have an issue with who ever has been fixing your car or who ever has been driving your car, I would say, no offense, the latter is more likely
I have seen people with std magna boxes give them utter hell with exedy HD units that are heavier than the std evo clutch and the boxes hold as the people know how to use that far left hand pedal
As for anything from RPW< if you get that you will most likely still have more issues no matter how well you drive, if you really want to go LSD then go as mentioned above
BTW, the Ralliart box itself apart from the LSD is not stronger and you can also do a diff with an LSD if you drive like crap also

make sure the mechanic has checked the inner cv on the right hand shaft, also the support bearing.

Wat do u mean by this you saying lsd will still break.? I assumed the evo clutch was a more of an heavy duty clutch than the standard heavy duty.?

its not the wrong oil.. but its a mineral oil... with the type of driving your doing (evident by your breakages) id recommend to get something synthetic in there...
MadMax
13-08-2009, 10:34 AM
And what magic ingredient is synthetic oil will stop a gearbox component disintegrating under shock loads? lol
Nah, only kidding - couldn't hurt putting something synthetic in it. Won't work miracles though.
So with a quaife LSD there is still a chance i could blow it up.? Is everything around the gearbox that i need to replace for the quaife LSD or the stock components are fine.?

I've been using the Quaife LSD since my rebuild. several track sessions, including many burnouts, and it's running strong. Quaife actually have a lifetime, no questions asked warranty on their ATB diffs, so even if you break it they'll replace it or fix it for you.
oh yeah, I have an exedy heavy duty clutch (something like 2x the clamping force of stock) and my gearbox is fine even after the abuse at the track.

not quite sure what you're asking here... if you're asking if you need to replace any other components of the gearbox to fit the Quaife diff, the answer is no. you should maybe replace the bearings while you've got the 'box apart, but nothing else needs to be touched.

Gearbox has been rebuilt bearings ect. Only thing now is the quaife LSD. I was asking once this lsd has been fitted is the gearbox and everything around it strong enough stock.? without breaking anything else lol.?

I can't comment on anyone's driving technique, but my gearbox has been hammered over the last 9 months or so... it's still strong (touch wood). I don't have an exact number, but my car should be making around 180kw atw and I've done a couple of Wakefield days, three hill climbs (including burnouts at the line every run), and lots of hard and fast shifting.
the 'boxes are pretty strong. if you keep breaking them something is wrong. it could be mis-aligned or worn components, or driving style... hard to say.
so if everything is hunky-dory in the 'box (and mounts), it will be strong enough.
cheers,

K mate so everything else except your diff is stock in the box.? Aswell what mounts are u using.?

yep, stock 'box, stock gearbox mount. chro-moly flywheel, HD pressure plate.

If you fit an lsd, the fact it spreads the torque to both wheels would put MORE pressure on the box, would it not?? i think you answered your own question in the first post....burnouts!! ha ha dropping the clutch hard with burnouts or "hardshifting" is a sure fire way too kill it. anyway good luck!!
Hey Kurt
I have a clutch which may suit your needs..
It's a Xtreme Clutch part number KMI24003DCB semi ceramic plate but with standard duty pressure plate. It is for vehicles that don't need extra power capacity, but better heat tolerance for weekend track days, etc.
It suits 3.5 L.....Brand new still in box

mate!!!! he is killing his drive line with an organic clutch.. a ceramic clutch is the last thing he needs!!!
A cushioned ceramic plate and standard weight pressure plate I dont think is to aggressive?

A cushioned ceramic plate and standard weight pressure plate I dont think is to aggressive?
its going to put more stress on the drive train than the organic clutch that he has now....
I wonder which will give a harsher take up through the drive line?
1. Ceramic plate with a light pressure plate
2. Organic plate with heavier duty pressure plate.
Any ideas......
Can anyone tell me wat clutch the ralliart magna has the same as the standard 3.5l magna.?

It sounds like the box may not have been assembled to spec properly causing early failure.
Get the gearbox rebuilder to check it out.
Could just be bad luck.
Try running the Nulon Fully Synthetic Trans Fluid in your box, I am running it in my wifes manual and it drives better than ever.
Whatever oil you decide to use must be suitable for Hypoid type diffs.
I have generally always found that the cv's will fail before the box when under stress.
Good luck.

does anyone know how much and where i could get a manual conversion done im from down wollongong and i am over driving my auto i have had too many problems with it so far and i have always wanted it to be converted to manual. if you could help that would be gr8
Can anyone tell me does the Quaife LSD fit into the gearbox without any modifications wat so ever.? Cause my gearbox mechanic said something about pushing out bearings or along those lines might break when pushing them out or reshim the bearings around the diff to make it fit.? Is this true or is he trying to rip me.?
Thanks Kurt
