There are a few out there that have upgraded their Hi/low beams and also their interior lights, but has anyone done the front parkers with superbright LED's. What sort did you use?

The main thing to be careful of is the diameter of the head on it. Most multi-LEDs will be too big. I ordered some and found out the hard way. I just ordered these. Will report back results.

From what I gather when you change over your headlights to the bright white ones ( anything around 5700 kelvin) it makes the parkers look decidedly like the finger of a 60 year old chain smoker....really yellow!! The parkers are purely aesthetic but the high beams and hi/lows are for those that really like to see where they are going at night. I would have loved to see what my old light set up would have been like with these new globes. I ran 90/130's in the main headlights, 100w hella 160's and cibie super oscar pencil beams. Damn those puppies were bright lol

Peter_Pan put me onto an ebay shop with bright LEDs to suit parras (BA9S bulb base) - but I'm not at home at the moment to check the seller etc.
The bulbs are multi-LED on bits of circuit board stuff, with one LED facing forwards, and an array of 2 LEDs facing outwards behind that at four faces...... so total of 9 LEDs of the "surface mount type" - looking like little yellow dots.
They are very good, bright white/blue and much brighter than std parkers, but not stupid illegal bright (well, I haven't been pulled-up yet).
They were a very close fit in the parra lamp housing, but squeezed through with bit of jiggling - the hole in the reflector was the limiting factor. I also had to swap polarity of parker in one headlight to get LED to light up.

They won't fit in your parkers. Too big for the hole. The hole is not much wider than the wedge part of the bulb.

that is the kind of effect I was after. I put the verniers on the normal globe and it is 10mm exactly. I dont know how much clearance there is between it and the side but I suspect not much. I have asked re diameter on the ones I am interested in but am yet to hear back from them. Time will tell I guess.

I know 12mm DOESNT fit. So if the regular bulb is 10mm it must be a tight fit as is.

What you could do is sand some of the LED's down so the thing can fit in the hole. I know you can do it with normal LED's I dont know about these. Obviously you dont want to sand so much off it that it exposes the filament or whatever LED's have inside.

I was thinking about that. It appears that the outer is just a plastic casing and not the LED itself on the single 1watt version. The other, however, would be too big.

I have just measured the opening for the front parkers W5W and it will take 11mm diameter. It just misses out on 12mm. I have just bought some of the 1.5 watt smd w5w for the front from the USA. They are 12mm in diameter but the outer casing is aluminium knurled so I am going to have a look at them when they arrive to see if the alloy part is screwed onto the case and how much it will take to get 1 mm off the OD. Shouldnt be too hard me thinks!
This is the part if anyone is interested.

I was really tempted but just wanted to try something a little different. For me it is just about playing around a bit so I dont mind the extra time and hassle and they only cost $6. Your way would have certainly been easier. What wattage are yours?

The ones I got are the 1.5 watt ones. I like stuffing around a bit just to get something different. They are apparently a fair bit brighter. Will take some comparison pics if I think of it.

Installed the LEDs that mecha-wombat reccomended today. I can reccommend them as well. They are a nice white colour with a bluish tinge like HIDs. Plenty bright enough for just parkers. The fit didn't seem to be that good however. The first one I put in would wiggle and lose contact and go off, so I put the other LED in that socket and it was fine. So the 'dodgy' LED I tried on the other side, while still not perfect I found a position in the socket that held it enough and the LED would stay on.

I have been reading a bit on them both here and other places and it seems that on many of them you have to have you polarity correct for them to work eg + to + and - to -. If they dont work first time turn them around and that should fix it. A loose fit can be a problem though.
djnapkin
18-08-2009, 09:41 AM
Yeh it wasn't the polarity. It was a loose fit. More specifically if I pushed the LED all the way in it would stop working, if it was half in it would work but be loose. Swapped it to the otherside and it was fine. I socket can be tightened/bent slightly with a small screwdriver in any case if need be. I had to do that with number plate lights.
Heres a pic.

So, these "parkers" are just tiny little lights that come on when your headlights are on correct?
Coming from the UK, I have always had three main stages for a cars headlights:
1) Side lights
2) Main beam
3) High beam
Are what people are referring to as "parkers" over here the same as what I would call my side lights? Because it's comments like this that confuse me:
"really great to look at and against my stock lo beams they look so good"
See I read that as the lo beams are the side lights. Or is mecha calling lo beams what I call my main beams?
Cheers

The parkers are the first switch setting on the headlights stalk. Just those small bulbs light up. I guess the idea was for when parking, to show you are parking without bright lights everywhere. After that are the headlights, high-beams, etc etc.
The title "parkers" seems as outdated as "glove compartment". Who wears and stows gloves since 1909?

No that isn't where I am getting mine from and I would strongly suggest that you dont put those in any exterior lights on your car as you will get pulled over and defected quicker than you can blink!
I have ordered mine from here and they are 1.5 watt and meant to be a fair bit brighter. Bear in mind that I will have to alter these a fair bit (1mm off OD) to make them fit. I am the guinea pig so to speak, so unless you want to risk it or wait and see I would go with what Mecha has. They look really good and just plug in. Me? well I just like to make life difficult for myself and enjoy a challenge. I will let you know what they are like either way.

Just ebayed 2 sets of these 10mm T10 wedge bulbs, hope it's the correct size bulbs for my 380 and Territory.
I asked the OD on the bulb before I bought. I also measured the hole using my verniers, the end of a large drill bit and tape wrapped around the end to bulk it out. The diameter of the hole for the front parkers is between 11-11.5mm. I am going to manually adjust the 1.5 watt versions to fit. If yours are 11.5 or over you will have to do the same.
I only mentioned about the blue ones to save you grief and money mate. No sense in contributing to the Policeman's ball unneccesarily eh?

I joined in on 2 cruises and have been the only 380 so far (a bit embarrassing amoung all the 2nd/3rd gen Magna, even though there are some very nice Magnas).

Back from exile!! Jimmy dont do it! It would be a whole world of pain to do, and for what? The most that will fit in without mods is just under 11.5 mm.
Here is a pic of what my one looks like with the LED that I put in that was modified. eg this one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230359267451&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT
Note that the original type one has alot more spread and fills the reflector better. The new one is a little too blue for my liking. I have bought the same ones as Mecha and are awaiting them. I may even do a comparison pic between all three if I am feeling masochistic at the time.

I have done both H4 and H7's and they are definitely whiter. It may be hard to see in a photo though as the camera may have varying white balance and show them not as white as they are. You see the same effect when you are taking pics of snow.

IKYM. I took some pics of my lights tonight for comparison. Mine look yellower in a picture than they are IRL. I have some ebay 'Mtec Blue Cosmos 4750k' bulbs for H4, H7, and H11. Whilst they ARE that HID colour that looks good and match well with the LEDs, they are not as bright as even stock and are VERY blue for a minute or so until they warm up. That's a real issue when on highway and you put high beams on and just light up the place blue. I wouldn't recommend them.
