zzzz! I have an issue with my car.

Last night I start my car and the headunit wasn't working, so today I checked the fuses/tried restarting the HU etc but couldn't get it to work. About an hour later I go to drive my car and it has a little trouble turning over but it gets going, but all my dash lights are out except for my little climate control screen (even the speed alert screen). So yeh I'm stumped, obviously I cant drive the car because I cant see the dash. I also tried locking the car after I cracked the shits with it but it wouldn't lock, so yeh the central locking doesnt work either!

any suggestions????

(its a KH Verada for those concerned)

i would be looking at the fuses inside and outside the car
have you done anything lately to your car?
might be the battery, but check your fuses first ;)

yeh I plan to at first sunlight tomorrow lol
ahh I put a sub and amp in a month or so ago???

would the battery cause the dash lights to be off even when the cars running?

well its not the battery, I just went and got a new one (needed one anyway)

and yeh still have the same issue.

a few lights on the dash display work such as the highbeam light, TCL light, seatbelt light, but yeh no speedo or anything, the speed alert and HU still arent working either. The car also has trouble turning over.

any more ideas????

*just a note that the HU stopped working before everything else?? dont know if this suggests anything?

Regarding the gauges not working, are you sure the dimmer isn't just turned all the way down?

I'd take it to an auto elec

nahhhh
hahaha was the first think i checked
so something is affecting the HU, dsh display and speed alert display, and affecting the car starting up

Sounds like you had a loose terminal on the battery and the constant touching/not touching has caused some fuses to blow. Check the main fuses under the bonnet and check all fuses in the footwell.

yeh i checked all the fuses, only a few of the big black ones im not sure on
but would a fuse cause a car to have trouble starting?

lol the big black ones are relays.

If it's one of the main fuses then it could be cutting the power supply to your ECU or something along those lines.

Oh, YES indeedy deedy doo dah daaay. Blow certain fuses, and you'll never start your car again..... until you fix the fuse. EVERY electrical sub-system in the car will be protected by a fuse or combo of fuses, including the starter motor, the ignition system and the ECU. There are even fusible links wired-in to the main feed from battery.

Another possibility would be wiring troubles - melted insulation causing shorts etc - altho you would expect this to blow a fuse somewhere.

The workshop manual and wiring diagrams should give you a clearer idea of which fuses protect the stuff you have "lost".

have you checked the ones inside the yellow box? (fuse's in the engine bay)

i can almost grantee it would be a short somewhere, most likely to do with the amp i would say, i have has a similar problem when i installed my head unit a few years back and it gave me all the same problem that you are having except for the trouble turning over but all the rest like the backlight for the hud i had the same problem. since the amp is usually directly connected to the battery (if i am remembering correctly i am a little rusty with my wiring knowledge) i would be checking the connection to the amp and making sure nothing has moved etc.

i would also suggest if you cant find it your self take it to an auto electrician probably will save you in the long run, especially if they stuff something up.

well i just disconnected the amp but still the same issue
hopefully i can get the car into an autolec tomorrow

just before i turn the car over i get a ticking under the bonnet, and I just also noticed none of the interior lights work either

i still reckon its a fuse
try replacing them, even tho they look fine they may still be faulty
you should have acouple spare in each fuse box

I'd be getting the alternator checked out too. We've had similar issues in the TR years ago which turned out to be the alternator on its way out. Car struggled to start, and slowly more and more electrical items stopped working.

Yeah take it to an auto elec. probably not charging and depleted your battery. Dunno about 3rd gens but 2nd gens dont have a fuse for the starter, thats direct from the battery.

I had a similar problem a few mths back.. it turned out the noob that owned my vrx be for me had cut the power to the ciggy lighter to run something else... and when he had re joined them he only paired the wires together and taped it.. one morning i went to start the car and i had no lights and the car barely turned ova.. the dodgy wiring came apart and shorted all the dash and head unit out.. 14 fuses later...lol so maybe wouldn't hurt to have a look behind the head unit/dash

+1, had the same prob & found out that 1 of the fuses in the yellow box thing was blown, changed it & it was perfect, you sure you checked that fuse???

Sounds like you may have a fusible link blown for a particular circuit, otherwise it could be an earth issue.
What ever circuit it is, think about what is supplies, eg: dash lights, hu (back up wire I am assuming here), central locking and so on.
These are all constant feed requirements.

well my cars still in at the autolec,
not sure if they have started work on it yet but when i dropped it off yesterday the guy said he doubts its the alternator, which is good because I didnt want to fork out more money after the $650 major service

so yeh fingers crossed its nothing major and also that i get my car back soon

dunno, i also reckon the alternator. just last week i was driving home and put my high beams on. my HU turned off and the interior lights flicked off/on. when i turned them back off the HU turned back on and all was good.

well I just heard back from the autolec,
good news and bad, the cars all working again, but the CD player is *********!

so Ill be going into pick it up today and find out exactly what was wrong with it

I'm not sure how long of a warranty pioneer HU's come with, as its now over a year old
goddamn!
