View Full Version : bonnet soundproofing in Magna

I'm trying to make my TW ES quieter, in particular there is quite a lot of engine noise. The bonnet soundproofing is a thin sheet of plastic stuck with clips to the underside of the bonnet, so it looks as tho' I could take it off, put some ?dynamat there and put it back.
Has anyone done this?
And does anyone know what Mitsu did in the Verada here?
Thanks
Peter

I'm also interested to see what else could be put there, my bonnet lining now is falling to pieces..
Bonnet lining? Heh I dont have that.
First - Dynamat Xtreme.
Then - Dynamat Hoodliner.

pretty sure that lining under the bonnet is to minimise the heat coming through the bonnet

Stinger do a hod liner for that sort of thing.

Ers.....soon your car will be entirely made from Dynamat...haha :woot: i like it
hahahah I wouldn't be putting dynamat on the bonnet Ers, last person I saw do that had it melt to his engine after a decent drive, took 20 minutes to open the bonnet again and it stunk!

Is he sure it was Dynamat Xtreme?
Its advised by Dynamat to use under the bonnet, with Hoodliner over the top of it*
As in, dont put on Dynamat Xtreme on its own, either use Hoodliner by itself, or use Dynamat Xtreme covered by Hoodliner.

Hoodliner is heat retarded so won't smoke up from the engine bay ( bit like the turbo bags )
You may need to add a bonnet vent or something if you do the entire hood.
I wouldn't be looking at the hood as much as looking at the firewall and surrounding areas if you un-happy about engine noise.

Yeh, that's what I thought you'd say. Not easy to add soundproofing to firewall.

Top half of firewall do in the engine bay, bottom half do in the car under the carpet as high as possible. Not that hard :D:D
If you do the bonnet it will probably make it worse in the cabin...

I checked the factory manual and it doens't show any difference in the "hood silencer" for Verada, suggesting that you're right.

I think it is more common sense. There are 6 potential sides the sound can escape from bonnet, firewall, passenger side, driver side, bottom, front. Add soundproofing to one and the rest will increase to disapate the sound unless it is totally sealed which can not happen. :D
Just don't want you to waste money mate! Perhaps you could try something temp like a blanket or something on the bonnet while stationary and give it a rev to see if there is a difference.

That all depends if the sound is being absorbed or reflected

Engine bay is metal, plastic and rubber.... again common sense - but I could be wrong :D

The blanket suggestion is a great idea: I'll give it a go and let you know.

Not particulary.
Sound deadening one area and not another will lessen the volume of noise, but it will be apparant what area's were not sound deadened - making them seem 'louder' than before.

Tried the blanket-on-bonnet experiment (about 6 blankets actually) and made no difference, not that my ear notices.
So that's a good outcome: didn't waste my hard-earned $$.
Thank you Mr Charisma for the great suggestion.
