View Full Version : Issue: Tiptronic WON'T shift UP
I have an issue with the tiptronic where it won't shift up. It will shift down. When in D the transmission shifts up and down fine but won't shift up in manual mode. Anyone experience this problem before???
Any help appreciated.

So the shifter itself cannot be pushed up or the box wont change up?
I had an issue where the shifter would not move in the upward motion, turned out to be a little bit of plastic wedged in the way underneath it. Removed, problem solvered.
No the stick will move up but the box won't change up..possibly some kind of electrical issue?

are you talking GEAR (ratio) shifting or the LEVER used to change gears?
If it is the ratio you are talking about, This car is fantastic in the sense that it gives you total control of how you choose to drive the engine; Unlike most European cars where it functions to delay the shift apart from manually using the Lever. How Boring.

all signs point to yes... I would assume the switch which tells the box to shift up is broken.

Ooops too late, disregard the previous...... I reckon it is a faulty switch, or the switch has just become loose. rip the console apart and have a look

Yup,
Lift up the centre of the console and have a look.
Here are the 3 pages from the shop manual so you can see how it all goes together.
Possibly a connector has fallen off, most likely that one of the microswitches is broken or is somehow defective.

Thanks for the doco and all the responses. Will check it out when I get home today. If it is a defective switch, can you only obtain it from Mitsubishi?

I wouldn't think so, but you'd probably be best getting it from Mitsu. they'll at least know the exact type of switch and have the right connectors.
Just an update. Thanks to member Spud100 for the diagrams which helped. Took out the center console but wasn't game enough to touch the transmission lever components. Had my mechanic take a look, it was a buggered little spring on the upshift lever which he repaired for free. If he didn't spot the buggered spring it would have cost a few hundred to replace the whole unit. Glad it was just a small issue :)
