View Full Version : Flushing brake fluid

I'm going to flush out my fluid next weekend; at one stage I had to top up the fluid due to pads being worn, and not knowing what brand of fluid the workshop used I put in Castrol Super DOT4. (I had a feeling they used PBR DOT5.1 but I couldn't find it anywhere). I'm getting a mushy pedal now as the two fluids have probably mixed and isomerised (or I have an airlock from the time I boiled the fluid...

I have noticed that the ABS modulator reservoir is at the low mark; in the Gregory's manual it says that this should not require to be serviced or topped up? If the fluid requires topping up to replace the ABS Modulator. I have noticed that the fluid in it is a clear/brown color, different to the bright blue fluid I have in my master cylinder.

Is the ABS modulator reservoir fluid separate from the Master cylinder circuit? Is it OK for me to siphon out the ABS reservoir + top it up with DOT4? I have read that a lot of the time the ABS modulator stores brake fluid inside the valves which cannot be flushed out unless you cycle the solenoids with a service tool. Consequentially when you flush the main brake system, the first time you activate the ABS whilst driving the old fluid gets released and you undo all your good work.

Please advise as all the information I have found so far is not specific to the KS + so each source gives conflicting advice. (Even wheel bleed order).

Hi Jim, always bleed the brake furthest away from your Master Brake cylinder, i'm sure you know that already.

I also bled my brake fluid over the weekend, and i'm using Castrol Super Dot 4 as well, a noticable improvement.

I think the ABS module is filled with what ever brake fluid you're using, If you want to bleed the ABS module fully, you'll need to do do multiple caliper bleeds to get ride of the fluid in your abs module. How many times do you go around each caliper to bleed? to be sure, just bleed each side one more than than usual... but this uses up a lot more of your new fluid.

good luck.
