View Full Version : Exhaust too loud

Well the misses has finally cracked and said the exhaust on my VRX is too loud, she is too embarrassed to drop my daughter to kindy in the magna as all the other mothers turn around and stare the car down when she pulls into the car park. My daughter also complains on long drives that she gets headaches because the car is too loud.
This is whats making the noise: I have had the 2+1/2" piping replaced with a new one (not mandrel bent or stainless, just standard), removed the center muffler and replaced with a resonator/hotdog and replaced the old stock muffler on the end with a oval magna flow muffler fitted with a 4"tip. I dont want to change the note of the muffler but I do want to quieten it down a bit without sacrificing performance.

I have in mind one option which is replacing the hotdog with another muffler, possibly one equivalent to the stock one I had before or one even better.
Can someone please help me out with some constructive advice as I think my magna could be on the verge of being sold if I dont sort this out.
Thankyou in advance for your help.

Sorry to say, but if you want less noise you have to sacrifice performance. BUT, in a Magna, I can't imagine there being bugger all difference anyway.
Put a muffler back in the middle and put a quiet muffler back on the end, or return it all to stock. It's not worth the grief from your family over it.

A friend of mine has one fitted on his 200sx, went for a spin last week to see how it all works. You can cruise with the butterfly closed but cant accelerate it just bottoms out. Then again its a different engine with a turbo which relies on exhaust flow.

I agree, now I wont be changing the magna flow as I have already given away my stock exhaust so that will stay on. Would you have any suggestions on what sort of a middle muffler I should fit, preferably a more free flowing one than the stock.

Any idea how much a Varex is worth - ball park figure? It's an interesting idea... even if it is a bit gimmicky.

I have never had any experience with varex mufflers, but i have spoken to atleast 3 exhaust shops who dont suggest them, as they have had people come in, with the valves burnt out or damaged in some way. i would suggest putting in another resonator and see how you go.

may I suggest a cheaper alternative...?
ear plugs!
but seriously, you can fit up to 3 resonators on a magna. try that before you resort to a new muffler.
cheers,

No one has suggested . . . . returning everything to stock! No noise, no headaches. No police attention!
Shoot me down in flames if you must . . . . . . lol

Yes it has been suggested and why would he possibly want to do that after purchasing a new exhaust which he likes the note of. He has also said that he does not have the stock muffler anymore.

Family comes first over a 'nice exhaust tone' IMO.
Looking around for a VRX exhaust might be an idea.

Yes but as far as I can tell he wants the same note but just quiet it down, then everyone will be happy and it wont ruin his previous investment in the new exhaust.

The factory system has a hotdog, centre muffler plus rear muffler, correct? Excuse me as I'v never owned a magna FWD sedan :)
So, replicate the system with a larger hotdog, a straight through louvred centre muffler & if that fails, you may have to replace your rear muffler for a larger one, (still straight through, but it will be quieter).

Got no problem with my Varex, nor any problem with the Varex on my mate's SR20.

Exactly, personally I like the note the magnaflow gives. I have also suggested ear plugs too but the little one will keep pulling them out lol

Great suggestion Al, I might have to try this one out.
When I had the exhaust replaced I had noticed on the old system that the centre muffler was smaller than the end muffler. Was that so it would fit under the body of the car or is there more to it then that?

Nope, canon style ones are cheaper. The oval ones, and oval twin tips are around the $400 mark.

Look, another hotdog will not restrict anything, and will reduce drone + a little noise... its also the cheapest option.
Try that 1st..
