have noticed that the new lancers have the option of coming with this option
says you dont have to pull out your keys to open the door/boot
just wondering if anyone knew alittle more about this system and what it does?
and if theres a way to fit it to our cars?
thanks Rob

Yeh my old woman has one, CJ VRX. No key in the ignition or anything there is just a knob on there to twist to start the car, she just leaves the "key" in the centre console. Its a really cool feature, not sure how easy it would be to do on a Magna tho

Basically, your keys constantly send out a signal which is received by your car's central locking system, then there are sensors behind the 4 door handles, and possibly the boot too? so when you put ur hand there to open it, bam, unlocks. Then when you walk away after a certain distance, auto-locks.
I imagine you'd be able too - would have to completely replaced the central locking system under ur dash, as well as all the door handles with new wiring, key etc.. probably pretty pricey?

yeah but what do you actually take from it? lol
we dont have wreckers in WA like you do in VIC so if they forget something then it'll take you awhile to find the missing peice

My mum has that in her lancer, i think personally its just annoying, its easier to just use the buttons on your remote or manually use the key to start up. Plus wiring would be a pain in the a$$ and you would need to install buttons to the outside or your doors n boot.

It works very similar to how you have described however there is only sensors on the 2 front doors to automatically unlock the doors when you put your hand behind them. There is also a small black rubber button on the handle, next to the key-hole that when pressed (so long as you have the Smart key in your pocket or close by) will lock the doors. There is another small round rubber button on the boot lid, that when pressed, again with the Smart Key in your pocket, will open the boot.
My Mum lost one of her Smart Keys not long after she got her CJ VRX and a replacement one was around $450, cut and coded by Mitsu.
She hates them and I'm not a fan of them either. We leave our cars in our garage, usually with the keys in the ignition (behind a locked roller door) so it is easy to just jump in and move one car to get to another. Mum always has her key in her handbag so whenever I jump in hers to move it the dash always tells me "Key Missing" or "Confirm Key Location"
With the Smart Key, it is also impossible to lock one in the car, which is obviously a good thing. But we once left the spare in the car and couldn't work out why the bloody thing wouldn't lock via the rubber button on the door handles. Had to manually lock it with the remote.
I can see the logic behind them, but most of the time I find it more frustrating as you still have to actually turn a "false" key that is jammed in the ignition to start the car anyway. Would be better if it was a push button ignition.
Also, another story.. I once dropped mum off wherever in her car, she got out and took her bag (and subsequently, her Smart Key with her) and I then proceded to then take my sister to the airport. Now it only beeps for a short while (10 seconds maybe?) as soon as the Smart Key leaves the vehicle while it's still running and says "Confirm Key Location" on the dash. You can still drive the car for as long as you want because it's still running. I obviously didn't hear it beeping because of the radio. So on the way back I stopped to get petrol and turned the car off. Went to start it (with 3 people waiting for the bowser behind me) and it tells me "Key Missing". GREAT! And because it's Automatic and it's in park, it's locked there until I get a key so I can't even push it out of the way.
So I think they are a bit of a stupid novelty and pretty much useless unless they have an actual 'slot' like the BMW's have in the dash that you can push it into so you know it's always in the car. I think this charges the remote but you can still start them by just having it in your pocket. The only good thing is being able to just put ya hand through the door handle and have it automatically unlock. But this also means you cant check to see if the door is actually locked because it will unlock again straight away.

maybe, but think of it like this
if you had your hands full with something it'll really take a load off having to put it down to get your keys out of your pocket to unlock the car
much easier if this smart key thing as you just grab the handle to open the door without putting anything down

Agreed Defiantly more trouble than its worth and is just a novelty that gets the carsales person an easier sale.

I did something like this with my girlfriends Aurion, I was in her car & dropped her off home & then had to go to my place to get some stuff coz I didn't have my car. I realized half way what the stupid beeping was so when I got to my place I had to leave it running in the driveway & hope no one came along & drove it away while I was inside lol
I can see the good points but one thing I hate about it in her Aurion is the start/stop button. I reckon it is on the wrong side of the steering wheel as I always reach with my right hand to turn it off then realise it's on the other side.

Ha i was actually thinking about how to go about putting this on the magna the other day but think I've been talked out of it
Our ZG Outlander XLS also has the smart keys. Infact it has the same dash and steering as the Lancer as it based on the lancer platform. Anyhow. It also has a key inside the FOB if you want to use the keys and also has two buttons to lock/unlock. It does not have the two stage unlock (anti-jacking measure). The sensors work by RFID. There are IR sensors behind the front doord handle and the boot handle. So, if you place you hand onto the sensor and the system detects the keyfob via RFID then it locks. Likewise when pressing the black rubber button for locking. I did notice that the lock/unlock buttons on our fob has a > 100m range so we have to make sure that we don't accidentally bump it when we go shopping. It is also smart enough to know that you have the keys in the car when locking via the black buttons and beeps at you, however, you can lock it with the lock buttons on the fob while another set is in the car.
I find this feature very useful when you are carrying things and also when wearing jeans with tight pockets. Wife finds it handy when carrying the baby.

I don't have one personally but one of my mates has an EVO X MR and we spent quite a while fiddling with it.
The range is very accurate.. to open the boot you gotta be literally with half a meter arc of the boot, same with the doors, and you can't start unless its actually inside the door bay.
Also RINGA//ART i love how you complained about the key missing warning working as well as wishing it worked better at the same time. :P Do you have a non-standard stereo? I got the impression when I was in it the beep was out of the speakers but perhaps not.. also the EVO X MR had the "MMCS" so you got a warning screen on the stereo part as well. That might be different to non-MMCS optioned cars.
We found it wouldn't start unless the key was actually in the drivers side, not the passenger.

As long as the key fob is in my Mum's Lancer it will start. It can be anywhere.
The beeps (a series of 4 very short beeps) can be heard from outside the car only if you try to lock it with a Smart Key still inside or walk off with the key and the ignition still on. Its to alert the person that's walking away with the Smart Key. It just displays the "Confirm Key Location" warning screen on the dash display/speedo inside the car, but no audiable warning.
The beeps definatley don't come out of the speakers either. Car has the stock Rockford Fosgate sound system. No MMCS. May be different for the vehicles fitted with the MMCS, but I doubt they would change it for that. Could also come through the speakers in the Evo's as they have a better security system in them.
I still think Smart Key FTL.
