hi, i ran into the trailer the other day, haha, and i did a repair job, (fibre glassing, car bog adn respray front bumper) but i forgot to take pics. this time i made sure i did.
i am sure that i am not the only magna owner that has peeling, cracking, rusting or chipped paint, so i decided to fix mine. i though why not help others, so i took some photos just incase anyone was planning on doing this but didnt know how. this little job i did in 45 minutes, was quoted 250 to do. so i decided to do it myself (however this isnt my first time)
ok, i didnt get photos or video of this, but i had pealing paint, and rust specs on my bonnet. just the clear topcoat was peeling.
like this.

these are the two items i am using, gloss top coat by septone. $12.50
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm292/bellto/23082009474.jpg
and mixed airosole by my local wholesale paint store, (cairns wholesale paint). they did a great job, even got the metalic flake right. $28.50
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm292/bellto/23082009475-1.jpg
all up including the hair dryer, paint and sand paper, it cast me $55, so it is woth it. i also have enough paint to do the rest of the bonnet 2 more times.
STARt:
first, sand the area back. doesnt have to be to metal, but it has to be smooth,
first use 180-200 p sand, the go to 400p, then 800p. (unless specified otherwise on you particular paint tin, its usually 800p)
if there are small holes/imperfections, use 4 coats of 1 step primer/filler. but if it is already smooth, just use you paint if its self priming. (the paint store will help you with technical bits.)
it will look kinda like this when you are finnished preparing:

now, make sure that your area is free of dust and grease/oil. even off your fingers.
start sraying, hold the tin 10-15-20 cm away from the area. it all depends on how you spray. do it slowly from far away, you dont have to be really smooth. if you do it from 10cm, move slightly quicker, and be really smooth and consistant.
SPRAY A LITTLE BIT ON AT A TIME. THE FIRST COAT SHOULD BE VIRTUALLY TRANSPERENT.
remeber, you can put more on, but if its too thick and it, runs your back to square 1.
after 1 coat:

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm292/bellto/23082009469.jpg
to speed things up, i used a hair dryer between coats,
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm292/bellto/23082009470.jpg
dont hold it too close or the paint will blister, keep it moving, only use it after the paint has been on for 30 seconds.

after clearcoat, before 2000p sand and polish:

http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm292/bellto/23082009472.jpg
you can see the area where i painted, and around it is the clear coat over spay, you will need to us kitten cutting compoud to get the over spray off, then follow up with a really good polish with fine polish/wax. like 'kitten no.1' or 'turtle wax hard shell coating'
ok, this is after 1500p sand, the a light 2000p sand.

after the first little polish, but i ran out of *********** polish.
so its not finnished, i need to get more polish but here it is after 1 polish with kitten no.1 polishing wax. after i do it again with more kittern, i will get some turtle wax hard shell coating, and it will be tops.
shinny:

this is the transition from original paint to the paint i put on last night, barely noticeable from 5cm, let alone 5 meters. look how close the paint mixers got the metalic flakes to original. stoked.
http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm292/bellto/24082009480.jpg
here is a pic comparing new to old, i promise you that i will have the new as shiny as the old by tomorow night.

this was a spur of the moment idea i just had tonight, i will show you the finnished product tomorrow night.
hope this helps.

Nice work mate.
Myself, I am one for keeping the outside of my car in tip top condition whenever I can and as such I stay away from acrylic paints as it is no where near as glossy and or stone resilient as 2 pack.

If you put in the work you can get acrylic to look almost as good as 2 pac but not so much depth to it.
also acrylic is sooooo much easier to repair.

agree. my bumper respray looks easily as good ar the rest of the car, and was $200 cheaper, and i didnt need to use the compressor.
first part edited, for a bit of story, lol:gfight:

I'm with TUFFTR, admittedly more work, but better finish and more resilient in the end.
Look forward to seeing the results of this though~
EDIT: When I do the sun damage on my roof I will post before and after pics for comparison.

doing my sun damage roof tomorrow. i am just going to sand, then clearcoat, because there is no chips or peeling, just yucking fading over coat.
edit: we should make a sun damage repair thread, haha, 2 pics only (before/after), no text.

i am trying that tomorrow. i will take pics and let you know how it goes.
before you paint, p2000 sand paper (super super fine), wet and dry, and make sure you ue heaps and heaps of water, then sand until the water turns milky coloured from the clear coat coming off, then really buff it up, (push firm, do it until there isnt any more scratches from the sand) with turtle wax hard shell coat. that should fix it. i tried it on my roof but it didnt work because it was too bad. but it did work on my bonnet, actually worked really well.
Edit; thats a sweet sig. and, your shit would look better with a columbian necktie, lol

Will this technique work on a bumper?

Will this technique work on a bumper?
Yes, but since a bumper is so big, you'd go through almost $70+ in paints.
Can of primer, Can of spray putty (or twp?) Two cans of color, 2 cans clear, cut polish
For arond $200 you can get it done professionally so just keep that in mind, you can get a bootlid done for $150ish, or better yet, find one at the wreckers in good nick, thats what I did, cost me $20 :D

Your cans like 3L dude lol. I did I think 2 coats of primer, sand, 2 coats of color, made sure it was even, and about 3 layers of clear then sand and polish and yeah went through a bit of paint.
top marks on the bonnet looks mint

Wow nice work man, yeah I tried to fix up some damage on my bonnet. It was a fail, but after reading this I might give it another go with the steps you suggested.
Three questions:
1. Are you just polishing by hand?
2. At what point did you polish off the over spray of the clear? (Is it after you sand the good clear coat with 1500/2000? I know it doesn't make a difference, I just want to know. )
3. Any idea where I can get someone to match and mix up the paint? Is it some sort of special car paint? (I originally got some from autobarn, just giving them the colour code. It is horribly off).

Im not wanting to do the whole thing, I have around 20x20cm area I want to do (and maybe a few tiny paint chips).
Is that $200 you quoted to get the whole front bumper resprayed?? If so Ill do that!! :D

ok. I am replying on my phone so if it is a bit hard to read or something thats why.
1. I am polishing with kitten no. 3 compounding polish by hand. Then using a sheep skin disk that goes over the drill with kitten no. 1 cut and polish. Then after that i am using turtle hard shell way by hand.. Dont need to do the last step but it makes it so much better.
good tutorial bellto, if ever I need to patch anything up I will be sure to consult this thread again :)

Ring around panel shops and you will find qoutes that low. just check some of there other work while you are there.
Also might be worth taking off the bumper and giving it to them, for $200 sometimes they'll leave it on the car and mask the car off

I see, any ideas on where I can find somewhere to mix up the paint? Does it have to be automotive paint?

Yes, try an automotive paint store.

lots of normal paint supply stores will mix paint too.
dont just give them a colour code...... when i got mine done, i gave them the code, showed them the area, and too my fuel door off so that they could have a reference sample to compare and match.
