my sister wants a cd player in her astina, she wanted me to just ado a quick job so i got to work on pulling the old.
i found all the wires i needed.

POWER
ACC POWER
EARTH
LEFT+
LEFT-
RIGHT+
RIGHT-
R/LEFT+
R/LEFT-
R/RIGHT+
R/RIGHT-

Both the cd players i tried, when i changed the source to "CD" the player kept powering on\off at a constant rate(not randomly)
i tried different cds and a different play and still had the same problem. i tried using the cig lighter power and STILL had the same problem when trying to play a cd.
any clues?????

i put one of the players into a Navara and it worked perfectly.

i am clueless, i was thinking that the stock earth for the casset player might to oo crap, but why the on\off at a constant????

PS: astina's were not meant to be dis-asembled( had to take off almost the entire dash) lol

Yeah the stock earth is insufficient for most aftermarket H/Us.

Find a good earth and use that.

Would that explain the hu turning off when trying to play a cd? Coz i realy dont want to dismantle the car unless im sure i can get it working.

Well, generally, the unit will power up and then power down again if the earth is not strong enough. Never come across one that only does that when the CD function is in use.

But its worth a shot.

Its kinda got me stumped, except to say when I was putting a Verada-spec OEM HU in my Sports - I'd got to the stage (without realising) of battery nearly depleted by doors/boot open and lights on...... hooked-up radio HU - it flicked on and off at a fairly constant rate. Thsi was when the whole bloody dash was installed again, too. Thought radio was cactus, so swapped it out, put old one back - with same result. THEN the dead battery became apparent.
So in my case I guessed a relay was coming-in, trying to give accessory power and then failing due to low battery charge.

With yours, and only on CD setting - its got me a bit stumped. Try other accessories at same time, interior lights, heater fan etc - try to see if its JUST the HU affected?

Hadn't considered the earthing suggestions - Please post-up if thats the answer, I'll save the info somewhere in my skull for future reference!!

Run a new earth mate as nemesis said usually not enough for an aftermarket HU. already learnt my lesson once with this lol

if you have any speaker wires shorting on each other or the car, as soon as the cd tries to put current through them into the speaker, it will detect a short and turn off. this explains why it only does it when the cd is on. (im guessing you have it all plugged in and you havent tried the radio???) it works kinda like a safety switch. as soon as it detects short, it will throw out.

try disconnecting the speaker and antenna wires from the HU and see if it will play longer.

I'm going with the other posts regarding not enough power. It takes heap more power to spin and play a cd than to have the radio on. If you tune a radio station and crank it with full bass setting you will find it should power off the same as the cd function. The power wires for oem head units are tiny and dont carry enough power. You may have to run a power wire from the battery if you can't get enough from the factory wires.

Test the radio at full volume that will tell you if you have a power issue :)
