Hi,
In the process of costing a fit out for my newly aquired 1997 Verada and was wondering if anyone has any feedback on the following unit from Jaycar
http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=QM3784&CATID=24&form=CAT&SUBCATID=909
Does this have the capability to do GPS with an add on module?
Thanks,
J-D
Not sure.
However, if you plan on running amps in the future, hrm - I would find something else. 2 outputs, more than likely 2V....to me that spells 'run, run like hell'

Good point.. The other option I was looking at is another unit from DNA, link below.
http://www.dnaaudio.com.au/blowout_pages.html/adv6950.html
Really want a unit that isnt going to cost more than half the price of the rest of the system.
Cheers
Where can you get that DNA one from, and any idea what the quality is like?
I just searched and only found a couple of hits in google - one is ebay, buy now for almost $770 delivered.

I was going to try either through the site or through friend at work that used to work in the industry and going to help with my setup and install..

I've had a bit of a muck around with that Jaycar one actually, marketing got the description so wrong, lol. Has 5 channel RCA output, front, rear and sub with adjustable sub level. Not sure if GPS or TV Function in it can be activated as I'm not allowed to pull it apart to find out unless I buy it, lol. Did quickly power one up attached to my system.... I'd so have to turn all gains down, lol. Line level is actually quite good. Screen res is really quite good for "cheapie" unit and bluetooth works very well. Wana buy one but finance don't allow it yet, lol. Will update for those interested if I ever manage to find out more about it.

I was contemplating buying one, if you reckon it has the full 5 preouts I might actually consider it as that was one of the reasons I didn't get it.

Do a search on ebay - there are heaps from china that are the same as the Jaycar one, but have every imaginable feature for around 400-500 delivered.

So what voltage would the outputs be? Trying to find out the stuff that matters and when I sent email to "Tech" devision told me that was all the info they had on the web and told me to get in touch with local agent.. :wtf:. None the less I will get in touch with local guys unless you have some info to assist.

Not sure what the output voltage is per channel, all I know is when I tested it on my system with current settings, the system went ballistic with extra input, hehe. Subs were going nuts. So, am assuming they're pretty gutsy, think I recall seeing 4volt on the box, will try and remember to double check tomorrow. :)

Cheers again.

How reliable are these units? I have to go into Jaycar to buy a car alarm very soon, and we need a HU for the Elgrand as the Jap radio won't work in Australia, and the factory CD player is rubbish. Might try and kill two birds with the one stone and try and save some money by getting them both in the one purchase!
Cheers, Greg.

Will try and get some specs from the booklet next time I'm at work to post on here. Reliability wise, haven't heard of any issues. They're good enough for people to steal though, apparently, had a mate have his go missing from his dash a couple months back. Have net back online now so hopefully a couple days and can put some info on here for those that are interested. An interesting point of note, though... I've hooked up external SATA hard drives to this unit (I've tried 160GB, apparently others have tried up to a Terabyte) and it reads quite happily. Takes a little while to load but since it's not really designed to do it but still does, pretty good in my books.

Awesome and purchased Jaycar equipment in the past and been happy and very reliable too so guessing these should be the goods but do want the specs ie noise ratio etc..
Cheers and got time so can wait.. ;)

Ok well Megatron can do the Jaycar QM3784 for $510 plus postage which is a great price. Can do cheaper if other products are brought as well. So i will go try and look at one tomorrow and see what there like. Bluey7 would love for you to confirm the specs, last time i went to my local Jaycar store they were a bunch of twits tbh lol

Ok guys went and had a look at the Jaycar unit today. Overall i think its a very good option for someone who is looking to setup a modest system.
The unit itself doesnt look too flash, but no Jaycar gear does. I took one out of a box and it appears to be very well made. The screen itself to me is brilliant for the price, was watching a clip on it for a little while before a salesperson came over and it was very smooth with nice colours.
Now the menu system looks outdated, not real flash looking but was quite responsive so no real probs i think. The salesperson cranked the system up for me (was one 2chan amp running 1 sub) and had to say sounded pretty nice for a store setup.
Only thing im not a fan of is the iPod connection or the lack there of. Can still plug one into the back using an aux cable though, so not a real issue.
Overall quite a nice unit, i will definitely get one unless i can get the JVC unit i really want.
Pics of the box:

Now need bit of advice. Im looking to run maybe this headunit one 4chan amp and 1/2 subs. Now i want the amp to run the front splits and the sub with 2 channels bridged, with the HU running the rear speakers. Can anyone see a prob with this unit and its specs being able to do that? I get a bit confused with how the RCA's and that work lol

Yeah will do it fine. The unit has USB input to plug the ipod into though doesn't it? As in use it like a portable hard drive.

Hmmm didnt ask tbh knew i would forget something. I know there isnt a plug on the front of it, might be on the back but not sure, the salesperson didnt want me to unwrap it from the plastic
Bluey7 did say he hooked up a sata drive to it though, so there must be one on the back

well it says there is a usb memory slot on the pic of the box you took, so I'm guessing if you plugged the ipod into this it would pick it up as a flash drive.
Damn I'm seriously considering buying this head unit, my only worry is the build quality.

Hahah i didnt even see that on the box, so thats all cool then.
Regarding the build quality mate, the one i took out of the box felt and looked very solid. The one they had on display looked good, sure not as fancy as an alpine unit of the like, but for the price im very happy with it. Would suggest going in and looking at one, it has pretty much convinced me.

seems like a pretty decent unit
it has 3 set of pre-outs Timmy, so you can run the 4 channel and a monoblock too
usb would be for a flash drive with MP3's on it
its not as high tech as the new eclipse unit though :P (only if you want a decent one and looking to spend between 2-3 grand)

it has rear USB cable for ipod, mp3, etc and a sd slot behind the front panel
i have the dvd mm head unit and its just out of warranty by 1 month... the bloody thing wont grip dvds to eject them and the face panel is loose so every time i push a certain button it does something else ie track up

Seems just like those eBay specials, rather buy a product in Australia so there isnt gonna be an issue with warranty etc. Still dont see a unit that beats the Jaycar one for price vs features/quality

Ok. Had a look at the booklet, not a lot more in that than there is already mentioned on here already, lol. Confirmed 4v RCA out, front & rear stereo with dedicated sub output. USB line on rear with SD Slot behind motorised face. As TimmyC Mentioned, menu system is very basic and does give false hope when running of TV Tuner and GPS Navigation, buttons are there but are disabled. I'm guessing more "featured" models from the manufacturer had these options enabled but they've used the same menu system for the whole line. I found screen res quite good, I tend to be picky on pic quality. Adjustable tilt angle on the screen so it doesn't have to be all the way up or down, not that you'd expect much less except maybe from a REALLY cheap & nasty unit. I believe it would read Ipods as USB Drives, it does with my Nokia. I'm looking forward to getting and trying one of these soon, wanna pull it apart to find out how hard it would be to expand and get TV & GPS working.
TimmyC
16-09-2009, 07:11 PM
Thanks for that mate :)
Its produced by a company called Electus im pretty sure, wonder if they sell an upgraded version with the gps and tv etc.
Regardless pretty much definitely getting one now, not bothered by the menu system.
Bluey what sort of warranty is offered on there units?
Bluey7
16-09-2009, 07:22 PM
1 year's pretty standard. Generally repair** in 1 year. Electus sources them but doesn't manufacture them. Electus is pretty much just the wholesale side of Jaycar. I have asked if we can source the upgraded versions to market them at store level but never panned out. I did find out once who they get their stuff from but stuffed if I can remember, lol.
**Repair's are generally fairly efficient, usually only a few weeks turnaround, if that.

Bluey7, how would you rate the build quality of the unit? I have heard horror stories of jaycar Hu's dieing after 1 year (though heard the same about panasonic, and my panasonic has been strong for years). $500 although cheap for what you get, is still alot of money to spend on something which may not make it past the 2+ year mark.

Honestly, the first line of head units carried by Jaycar was a little off in my opinion but my personal experience with the more recent lines has been a lot more favorable. I'm currently running the single din with Bluetooth but am looking to upgrade to the double din because a) I have the space and b) has better features. After having a play with the double din, and having a few of the others run them, I'm more than satisfied it's been pretty well constructed. Seems pretty solid and the CD feed seems to run pretty smoothly. But will have more insight once I get round to buying one and pulling it apart, lol.

Looks like a nice clean screen.
But I maybe picky, for that price I'd expect a higher output inbuilt amp(defunked point if your running external amps).
Wouldve though it should have DivX playback, did you check out the JVC units in this price range?
Quite sure they have DivX etc. (note. yeah the equivilant in JVC is 7" and has DivX but is $100 more RRP)
