hi i have a second gen 4 cyl . just recieved my pocketlogger hooked it up and had a look over my sensors, i was quite surprised the factory 02 sensor is working perfectly but my knock sum was zero and the highest it went to was 1. I dont think my base timing is set correctly and my Q is would the base timing affect the knock sum (i imagine it would cause the knock sensor adjusts timing threw ecu, but just guessing) and what do knock sensors do when they are stuffed??

they do nothing. they just stop functioning then you start pinging under load etc...

The fact it's reading as 0 or max 1 is a good thing! Also it will count once or twice when the engine cranks due to interference. You will notice the ECU will reset it back to 0. (at least, thats what happens to mine)
Knock is pre-detonation, i.e. a bad thing, so you do NOT want this happening. :)
Over-advanced timing can cause knock but doesn't really seem like your getting any.. I wouldn't stress about a value of 1 if it happened once.

the knock sensor will only read a value when you have a knock event. Now a knock event is a bad thing so having 0 all the time is a great thing. Many engines knock at different points, but uusally there is a threashold in the numbering before you can really call it a knock. Since all the device does is listen for a sound frequency that its told is a knock, as sound of the engine apporaches the frequency that it knows is a knock it may start to build up a reading, say 10-15 and when it gets to say 30 its knows that you are now knocking
For example. When tuning an sr20det using a PowerFC, the manual stats thta anything under 60 may not be knock, but pretty much anything over 60 is knock. This value is different for all engines, and the desired/detected freuqeney is depenadant on the engine in question
