View Full Version : Reverse Sensors - where to get them?

Greetings all!
After two recent accidents with reversing, I've decided to get some reversing sensors. I've had two accidents at night with backing into other cars, so I want to get a system that can alert me of the distance between my car and another.
I'm not really interested in a camera, because I don't see the point so much, I usually look out the rear of my car, and I'm sure it's not very safe to reverse without looking behind. So the traditional ultrasonic ones should do me fine.
So my question is, where can you get them from and how much? I've seen alot on ebay but I'm not sure on their quality and wether they'll last. Anyone bought reversing sensors off ebay before?
Where else can I get them? I've checked DSE/Jaycar/Autobarn/Supercheap and they all have the camera's. Anywhere else to check? What do we think of ebay?
Thanks!

ask lugo or mohit they had their sensors supplied and fitted and colour coded, other option is go on ebay and get the kit yourself to fit.

Ive installed them before, nothing you cant do yourself. the kit will come with the appropriate size holesaw to cut the holes just need to mark out the holes in the bumper properly, easy arvo job

Selmax (http://reverseparkingcamera.com/pages/sensor.html) in Dandy do it for $200 cash (supplied, painted and fitted)
I've had my Verada, SS and my mum's Focus done there
Lugo's had his Verada done there too

Can anyone recommend someone in Southern Adelaide who can do it at about the same price?

i bought them and did them my self and my cars black so no probs there they came black....
jimmya if ya buy them i can help ya install its really simple all you need is a long drill bit and a whole drill
and you get them from http://www.ryda.com.au (http://www.ryda.com)
Selmax is awesome, I love my reversing sensors.
Just worth nothing though they don't have a display as such to tell you how far away you are, the beeping tone pace changes as you get closer, starts at a slow beep from approx 1.5m and gets faster and faster until its a solid tone when your about to hit something! :P

Any difference between the products Selmax use or the cheapies from ebay? If $200 for just the installation, I'll seriously install them myself! I'm too much of a tight**** to pay $150 just for someone else to do what I can :P

Exactly what I need! I usually look out the back of my car, so I just need sometime that can assist with my reversing to tell me when i'm almost about to collide, especially now that I have a towbar.
Thanks for the posts!
Is the Selmax stuff worth the $200, or will the cheapies off ebay be just as good? I'm more concerned that they may just stop working after two months or something. What do we think - ryda vs ebay vs selmax (keep in mind I'm happy to do the work myself)
Personally to save the hassle of fitting it I'd go the Selmax option, but if you really want to give it a whirl yourself the kits you can buy aren't bad. Biggest difference is you can select your exact car colour with those kits, where as Selmax colour code the sensors and wiring to your exact paint, so it looks totally factory and blends in nicely.
Also Selmax sensors fitted are usually $239, if you tell them you know Mohit and myself from the Magna club who've had the systems fitted for $200 in past and recommended them to you, I'm sure they'll be more than happy to oblige. They want cash only at that price as well, but they still provide you with the full warranty etc, its just to avoid bank fees on their behalf.

i'd say they are basically the same, for all we know, they came from the same province in China. If you are confident enough and have the time to do it, why not wire it all up yourself.

Rhys...Just putting my 2c here but to color code them yourself its about a $20 for some small touch up cans of paint from super cheap, then all you need is a drill and a soldering iron.
I'm sure he does fantastic work and not trying to divert any business away from him but it's a simple project so very DIYable to save a few $$

Thanks Reece for uploading a picture mate - appreciate it :)
Yeah its nice and flush for sure. Lucky for me I have a black car so it shouldn't be too hard to colour match :D
I'm also looking at those ones that have a meter to tell you the distance from the rear and a on the sides.
What the opinions - is the little screen thingi work getting/paying extra for? I like the idea of seeing the distance but I'm too sure it'll make a difference when you're reversing.
Thanks again everyone for all the posts :)

If you are comfy doing it yourself then go for it
If you are not comfy drilling into your car and want a drive in drive out solution with a 2 year warranty then go Selmax

$200 cash to have it fitted or..... $50 for the unit from ebay + perhaps $20 postage + $20 paint = $90
savings of $110!!!!
I'd do that at least I can enlist the assistance of Paul and have a few beers with him and have good convos and laughs with change to spare I reckon...

You mean while you shine the torch on the bumper while I do everything:P
But yeah that was my point, if his car is black, then he doesnt even need paint!

Yeah I'm looking at getting This kit. (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Car-Reverse-Backup-Parking-4-Sensor-Slim-LED-System_W0QQitemZ370249654935QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item5634996297&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14)
For $60 I could buy it three times and it'll still be less than the Selmax installation!! But if it dies every 3 months then its a waste. I can't seem to see a warranty on this one. I guess that would be great about the selmax install, the piece of mind.
Anyone bought cheapies off ebay and had any problems?
Thanks!

ahh not parking sensors as such but i have got 2 ebay 7" headunits, one that i bought and another that came with my 2nd car. the one i bought is over a year old and still working fine and the one in my 2nd car is about 2-3 years (apparently cd/dvd player isn't working based on previous owner) but i don't use it and haven't checked it as i'm always on FM so meh.....
I had a set fitted to my 380 by Selmax in Dandenong. No problems, they work fine. Then I bought another set off EBay for about $50 and fitted them to my wife's Fairmont. The Ebay supplier is Brash Imports and you will find them on the web. They are in Caulfield, Victoria. The Fairmont ones work fine so I then bought another set and fitted them to the front of the 380. The ones from Brash Imports are black but you can easily paint them.

Fantastic! He looks like a good bloke too - I think i've found where I'm getting the sensors from! Its good to know that he is actually in Australia and really close too, so if anything goes wrong I don't have to fork out serious cash for postage costs. I think its all systems go for Brash imports - seems like the best option.
Thanks alot mate :)
If you look at his site you'll find he has a variety of reversing products. I just stuck 4 pieces of gaffer type on to the bumper, marked the spot to drill on each one and then drilled the holes with the supplied hole saw. The only difference compared to the Selmax was that the little buzzer was a bit quieter so I've simply put it inside the car rather than in the boot with the Selmax.

has anyone tried these?
Similar price to the ultrasonic, but no need to drill holes. similar price to the ultrasonic sensors as well.
Cheers,
HK
My understanding is that they are stuck behind the bumper and therefore need no holes. However I believe that they may only detect certain objects and non-conductive materials, such as concrete may not be detected.
Those type use inductance coils similar to ones used to detect cars at traffic lights. They only work if the car is in motion.

+1 learn how to reverse :P
My Opinion:
1. They are ugly...they look like warts on your car
2. As for their practicality , if you need them it because you can't drive...learn to reverse properly, go out practice in an empty car park until you get it right and learn your own car.
3. Damn Annoying....You get sick of the chirping/beeping sound very quickly, I drive many rental cars for work purposes, and I get sick of the beeping noise every time I put the car into reverse gear, even if there is nothing directly behind the car.
But if you MUST have them, then do it yourself its an easy job, and you will save money.

They may be a little ugly but their practicality is fantastic! And btw there GTVi I can drive and very well, its just my car has a towbar and I'm not willing to fork out 100's of $$$ because I was soo concerned on the a few dimples on the back of my car. Its not about not knowing how to drive, but making life easier and being able to park with a whole lot less stress and risk. If you've got money to throw around for hitting or near hitting other cars, be my guest, but I'd rather spend the odd $70 now and save the hundreds that I've already spent on fixing other cars because I didn't see them at night.
I might place a switch in the wiring to disable the speaker if I get annoyed at the sound.
After two recent accidents with reversing,
And btw there GTVi I can drive and very well
...of course, I can see you can  ...must be the car's fault ....in that case go ahead and install them.

I find that to be a bit of an insult. When you learn how to look through the metal frame of the car, the contents of your boot and the rear bumper simply by turning your head (ie. seeing below the boot line) get back to me on how you managed that and I'll get my sensors removed. Fact of the matter is they pickup things you sometimes cannot see in your mirrors or rear window, you certainly don't need them to reverse, but they're a much welcomed assist.

do you reverse blindly or do you actually look into the parking lot first as you go past prior to backing in?

Who would have thought a thread about where you can buy reversing sensors from would have ended up with people knocking others about the choices they make.

No suprises really :iough:

This coming from the guy who's reversed into stationary objects with his car twice in recent past? lol
Of course I look, but things can change very quickly. When you check your mirrors for traffic in the lane next to you do you then presume that 15 or 20 seconds later that lane will have the same space it did last time you looked? No you don't, same difference.

Happens unfortunately when you get people popping their head in on topics they've got nothing valuable to contribute to, so instead go about knocking ideas with their opinions on them (usually I find with little experience with the product/idea) when nobody had even asked for such input.

This coming from the guy who has sensors and a camera and almost backed into a concrete pole at the kebab place and missed it by about 2" cause you thought they were malfuntioning :P
(prettu sure wasnt it they were working yeah)

What? What concrete pole and which Kebab place? Is Pauly upset that Irvin has been owned at his own comment? lol :P
If its the time I was thinking of it was because it was a low line pole I didn't see when I reversed into the space, the sensors would've told me it was there....good enough reason to have them, if they've saved me from damaging my car.
I've always looked at it as for the $200 they cost, if they prevent me from hitting something once which I may not have seen, or may have moved between me looking and reversing (which believe it or can happen to anyone, even our heroic drivers like GTVi), then they've paid themselves off entirely.

Did I? Next time I park my car close to something I'll remember not to comment about it so you don't think I was about to run into it lol
Anyway this thread isn't about whether or not people like them, he's asking about what type he should go for and where to get them from. GTVi's irrelevant post on what he thinks of them has thrown the thread completely off topic.
thekovac, now you've seen how the selmax setup works after last night, it gives you a pretty general indication of how to use them and so fourth, for the most part they all operate in the same way. They aren't as loud in the car though as you heard last night with the boot open, that's only because the speaker is actually mounted to the underside of the parcel shelf hence making a lot of noise from outside with the boot open, you don't actually get that loud ear piecing beep through the cabin...would get bloody annoying if they were that loud inside! :P

I did want to say as much that I'm not really interested in people's opinion of my driving abilites. The purpose of my thread was to ask where I can get reversing sensors. I don't give two hoots about what GTVi or any other member who decides that they need to comment on my driving. Those who dare say I need to learn how to properly drive should actually more about me than a username in forum before they start making comments about my driving style. I'm not a bad driver, its just I am human and guess what I don't know about others but I wasn't born with night vision goggles, so unfortunately for me, maybe unlike other mutants who might hang around here, I can see out the back of my car when its pitch black. End of story.
Thanks again everyone who posted information about where to get them, and thanks reece for showing me the sensors last night. Its good to know where I can get them and how they look/sound. Personally I'm happy to have a few little sensors on the back of my car and be at ease when reversing, because sometimes we miss things. I probably will buy those sensors from Brash Imports for $60 and be done with it.
Thank you to those who were helpful :)
Mods - feel free to close this thread, I can't see anymore point of it continuing on. Thank you.

In response to what Brian has stated
It is extremely dissapointing to see yet again a simple tech question turn into a session of bitching and bickering
It is fortunate that Brian stepped in to this thread before I got a chance to as he was far kinder than I would have been, there would have been several members having a day off
Needless to say, that next time this happens, the associated members will be having an extended break from these forums
In short, to the offenders GROW UP
