are the front parkers working? have you checked the wiring to dimmer switch to see if it is connected? That would not explain why the stereo isn't working though

Just to round-out the scenario - what did you pick car up from? I seem to recall you had engione blow or something - just a quick note to let us know what work was being done on it might be good for our head-scratching!!

If fuses are okies, check earths and wiring connectors?

car had the engine out getting rebuilt, I think the issues lies in that the stereo is out and there is wires everywhere in the dash..

Thanks for extra info. Engine-out rebuild shouldn't have affected other stuff over-much, I'd have thought. Check for dislodged loom connectors in engine bay. I assume there was no ECU/TCU fiddling as part of engine resurrection? ie: no under-dash/under-console disturbance?

Is stereo OEM or after-market, and if aftermarket was wiring done with Aerpro style adaptors, or has loom been cut etc? The illumination wire in dash/stereo area could maybe be a culprit.... Fuse #10 in drivers footwell seems to ring a bell, as does one 10amp fuse in the yellow "pull-up" holder in
the engine bay....... but at this time of night I'm sorry I'm not going to dive into the manual or go to the car to check which of those relates to radio/tail-lights.

If the mass of wires under dash/stereo seem to be insulated and safe-looking, I guess you'll just have to work logically through it eliminating possible causes. the workshop manual often has troubleshooting flows for some of this stuff - starts on common causes or easily checked stuff, then progresses to more unusual scenarios - maybe have a read of the PDF workshop manuals and see what they suggest?

First check to make sure no wires are shorting behind the dash (stereo out).

With your dash lights not working, perhaps the dimmer switch has failed. If you're handy with a multi-meter you can test the switch.

With your tail lights - check that your brake switch is plugged in firstly. If it is, check with a multi to make sure its working.

Then if thats all right, check to see if you are getting power at the fuse itself.

For now thats all I can think of mate.

glad to hear its ok. Was gonna ask if the warning blinker switch was connected. i know all sorts of things stop working if that is not connected...
