Hey guys, haven't been around in a while
Bascially the ride was absolutely terrible in our car, so the guys at JAX recommended an upgrade from 235/35R19 to 245/40R19 tyres, assuring us they would fit.
They do, sometimes.
In other words, when you go over dips or major bumps on the road the rear tyres scrape.
We took it back to JAX and the guy there told us immediately (after taking it for a test drive) that he had the same problem with his car (a ute with massive wheels) and to fix it we could call some guy who would roll the inner guards (inside the wheel arch) upwards so that the rear wheels do not scrape on them when going over these dips/bumps etc. When the car is parked you can barely put your finger between this guard and the wheel so it does sound realistic.
Has anyone done this to their car? Does it actually help?
The only other suggestion was raising the car up, which I don't want to do because I have seen cars that have big wheels but aren't lowered and it looks like they are on stilts :-/
The ride though is much better after the new tyres so thats an improvement...

depending on what type of 3rd gen you drive and the stock wheels it came with
but with that new sized tyre will throw your speedo out a fair bit
the 245/40 tyre is only good on a 18" rim when your car came with 225/50/R17's stock

I only have 235/40R18s, but I had my guards rolled. The wheels sat *under* the lip so I was worried they'd touch with a heavy load/big bump. Even with a car full of mates and a boot full of luggage I haven't encountered any scraping on the guards.
I had my wheels/tyres fitted by JAX Quickfit myself, and they were able to roll the guards for me too. Only problem was due to the control arms on my VR-X it couldn't do the entire lip, but they managed to beat the rest out after consulting with me first. Most panel beaters are able to roll guards too.

Mine are 245/30/R20 and I need mine rolled, normal drive is fine just bumps and dips cause that awesome scrape noise

Another member has done similar (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57888) before.
His were 245/45/18, so very similar in OD & same width as what you've done.
In the end he had the rears rolled plus the splash guards at the front heated and shaped to accomodate the larger wheel. AFAIK he had no other problems.

Hmm, doing off-the-top-of-my-head maths in comparison to some other people I am really pushing the wheel size with this car :-/
It's a TJ (possibly Series 2, don't know how to tell the difference) Magna Sports, originally came with 16's I think but the previous owner put the 19's on and lowered it
By "throwing my speedo out" That would mean the car is driving slower then reported wouldn't it?
Also, it was suggested to us that we could go to a panel bneater, but I heard they may damage the paint?
Thanks for the help so far by the way.

What tyres do you have? Brand and load rating? It'll say something like 245/40/R19 95W.
Rolling guards is quite common. I had them done on my Ralliart for $50 a corner.

Using the this tyre size calculator (http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html), based on stock TJ Sports rims (215/60R16)...
235/35R19 tyres have a 17.3mm smaller diameter. When travelling at 100km/h (reported by your speedo), your actual speed will be 97.4km/h.
245/40R19 tyres have a 14.2mm larger diameter. When travelling at 100km/h (reported by your speedo), your actual speed will be 102.1km/h.
Legality-wise, both sizes are pushing it. In Queensland, you can only go for a rolling diameter 15mm larger than stock. You can go up to 26mm smaller legally, but I've heard that this figure is only 15mm in other states, which would have made your original tyres illegal.
Also, it was suggested to us that we could go to a panel bneater, but I heard they may damage the paint?
Like I said, my paint was fine from getting the guards rolled using the machine. It's started to chip inside the guard where they literally beat it out, but it's inside the guard (and I was in a sticky predicament) so it's not noticable anyway.

Brand is Accelera I believe, Can't remember the load rating

I'm in NSW, Wheel Size legalities don't seem to be enforced as I see all kinds of cars with wheels/tyres far bigger then they ever came stock. (And it just passed through Pink Slip if that counts for anything ;))
What I meant by pushing it was pushing the physical limit of what the cars wheel arches could take but I guess it will be fine. Using the graphics on the calculator you have posted (very nice by the way), it would appear that in size there is barely any difference between 245/45R18's and 245/40R19's, so if ther person linked to above had no problems with them then I shouldn't have any problems with mine unless my car has been lowered too much.
Thanks for the help everyone :)

Had 245/40R19s on my 3rd gen at the front - a lot of rubbing and also would smack the quarter panels when encountering mid-corner bumps. Swapped to 245/35R19s, only a tiny amount of rubbing now.

With the Magna I have there is little to no rubbing on the front, mid corner bumps are a problem but I have only heard them rub once turning right on a roundabout (a shocking roundabout that practically requires full wheel-lock)
The main rubbing is on the rear wheels, and there is very litle room between them and the guards. I just hope that if the guards are rolled then that will fix the problem when other people are in the car :)

Just thought I would come on and mention the end result. We had someone come and Roll the Guards, now with me and my father in the car (roughly 190KGs) there is now no rubbing whatsoever, only the front wheels on full wheel lock will in rare cases cause rubbing.
I was impressed with the result :)
Major test will be putting people in the back seat as well, not sure when this will happen
But yeah in summary it's pretty good now, it's a much better car now then it was with the thinner tyres :)

But are the tyres legal? What's the load rating?
