I'm havin trouble changing starter motor on a TE 97 V6. Starter seems almost impossible to get to all the bolts without a) Removing motor altogether or
b) Being a contortionist with a rattle gun.

Has any1 done this changeover and if so is there any easy ways that can get around costing me a fortune in a mechanic pullin the motor out

there are only 2 bolts + cables holding it on.... one from each side of the bell housing.... should be able to get too it with a standard spanner... it came out fairly easily for me once i worked out which bolts they were lol

Yeah mate dunno what your doing wrong here. Spanners or a 1/2" ratchet set (3/8" at minimum) will get the job done no worries.

Make sure you disconnect battery :)

My starter motor went a little while ago, was in the middle of know where. NRMA came and fixed it in no time, $300 or so if i remember correctly. Was a while ago so price could be out a little.

i just got a price on a new one in the northern suburbs (Thanx 4 the number TuffTR - right place wrong number), $260.. I'm getting it tomorrow and going to attempt to do mine.. Anything else i should know? I might need to find a pair of ramps.. i know Supercheap is having a sale this weekend.. time to shop.

wrong number hey....hmm..
Ramps are always handy, but if you decide to lower your magna, consider the ramps useless, this is why I have stands

i discovered that.. My car isn't lowered yet, however i couldn't drive it up the ramps while in the drive way or on the road.. I had to use the slight hill coming into my driveway to put the ramps on the slope going down and then drive up.. i didn't actually consider that at all.. question.. coming from someone who has been towed a couple of times.. wouldn't lowering yr car ensure u always scrape going up tow trucks?

Ah, you just don't have the right ramps. You can get specially made ramps for lowered cars, even my Evo can drive up and it's only about 60mm off the ground.

Should have called me bud, I can do you a tested second hand unit for a fraction of that FITTED lol

Fitting, that is east, remove neg terminal off battery, remove the 2 14mm bolts, one on top is done from box side, one on bottome from engine side.

Remove starter, remove cables and put back on in reverse

One hint, a 1/2 inch ratchet and socket WILL NOT get this off, you need a good ring spanner or combo spanner to get the top bolt off

all done.. Took me about 45 min with a cup of coffee in between. The bolts were REALLY tight.. Had to also use a pliers to get negative wire off.. Everything so drenched in grease and oil.. (should i be worried?). MADMAGNA, can u pm me yr number? I'd luv 2 have it on hand if i ever have a question.. I heard/read through the forums u r a self proclaimed magna mechanic, however u r located at the other side of town from me.. My starting problems may not b over as i've an aftermarket remote start alarm that i think was conflicting with my inbuilt imobilizer so now that i've changed the starter motor i've yet to find out if starting is still going to b a problem.. 24 hours later though and its still good.. starts everytime..

From what you described to me, it has to be a starter problem (motor spinning but not engaging) so safe to say you'll be right mate

thanx TuffTR. :) i think i may take the ramps back.. and get a set of the stands.. they were cheaper anyway, however reason i bought the ramps is i have a sloping driverway.. i guess i could put wood ramps to get my car up on to the iron ramps.. haha..

Reviving an old thread.. wondering if anyone knows.. Is the starter motor that comes in the TE compatible with a 2003 Series 2 VRX? I'm selling TE and would luv to just interchange starter motor as its brand new.. Can i do this?
