I think having mates with mini trucks is rubbing off on me.

Looking at their cars with the shaved doors, ariels, etc etc i think it would look tops on a magna

anyone have/had a car with poppers on it, was it annoying? Any issues with it etc?

Personal opinions on the look etc are welcome

for reference this is my mates car

poppers are the ad hoc door handles. you can see them right below the back of the windows on that wagon

speaking of, where are the ones on that ute?

This is nothing new. Modifiers have been doing this for years in the US. Just a gimmick to attract attention that's all. A lot of work just to show of that . . . . you've done a lot of work. lol

A "popper" is a solenoid that triggers the internal workings that used to be connected to the external door handle and the driver's door pops open a couple of cm. You then have to put your fingers behind the partly open door and pull the door open. Quite an unnatural action if you are used to door handles. Runs off a remote, just don't let your remote or car battery go flat! lolz.

Showoff factor: 100% Usefulness: -100% Good for a show car but a daily driver = fail.
Cost and difficulty: Welding, smoothing, repainting, installing solenoids.

That wagon looks awesome. Was for sale a while ago.

My mate had poppers on his VS statesman, was in street commodores a while back (GRAMPS plates), and yea while cool lookin, very irritating gettin the door open. He also had airbags and one night when his car was locked and lowered his battery failed... the car couldn't be opened and was too low to tow lol.

mm poppers and solenoids are different, because solenoids work on the remote opening the doors, poppers open the door physically... i only plan on shaving the backs doors if i do it (nobody sits in the back anyway :P)

I think if you're going to do it go the full way. Not half. Theres a heap of cars around here with all the doors shaved minus the drivers - looks tacky. I was tossing up between shaving the whole car or supercharging. If you do it shave all the handles, door moulds etc etc. With both of the above cars I dont understand shaving the door and leaving the rubber door moulds. Might as well go a full respray too :) If you want just the back doors modded just suicide them or turn the car into a coupe :)

+1 for the side mirrors.

I think there's a production car (maybe a TVR) with door releases under the side mirrors. cleaner than poppers, not sure about the legalities though. I think the door opening devices need to be obvious in case emergency services need to open your door after you crash...

cheers,

Could the auto release for the boot from inside the glove box be adapdated to do this task?
Take the mechanism from a wreck maybe?
Pretty sure the button in the glove box just completes a circuit and the mechanism is elsewhere in the car (correct me if im wrong)
Perhaps a few of these and get a small watter proof buttons form jaycar and mount it into your wing mirror?

Would be good to get someone to make door skins that have no door handle holes as it would be a bit of work but better finish and nicely replicated

Ha! still, the sable has a green metallic through it, would be interesting to see if I could have that replaced with red. Eventually I want the overall colour scheme of the car to be Black, Red and Chrome.
