Hi all!
In the process of finding a new car,i've been looking at third gens in a fair price range but find that they have km's of over 200,000 or before.
Has anyone had any problems with theirs around this mark or with higher km's or is there any major factors i should look at with the 3rd gens with these km's.I'm mainly lookin at 3.5's.
Cheers!

not sure where my dad's TE is up to, probably around the 400,000 mark now! only things that have needed attention is a slight head gasket leak (no head work/machining was required, just a simple gasket replace!) and the trans is getting a little jumpy

Woh!
Seems like they can take a hit and a half. Even if i was to get into something with high kms,i would put a new engine in and stuff as soon as i pay off some stuff

My TJ Sports is pushing 300,000. Nothing major since the transmission was replaced. I'll be selling it soon though.

If it's a bit over 200k, make sure the big 200k service has been done including timing belt and water pump
If it's an auto, I guess make sure the tranny is in good condition, worth while getting it flushed once you purchase it if it hasn't had one..
Apart from all the other basics to check out on any second hand car, you shouldn't have any problems!
Cheers.

really depends how it was driven. my in law got the 4sp auto solara, fully service and log booked.. ran perfectly then 6months later the gearbox went... wouldn't go into any gear and revved freely.
i had a look at the log book on mine and rang the dealership who stamped the last 2 to confirm it was done before purchase (one of them was te major service which included timing belt)... and i'm sorry to say that when it comes to dealership services it also depends which one did it.

Yeah, I agree with all the above, my TE has well over 200k and running strong, Touch Wood!
As dsp26 stated, depends how it has been driven, but a larger car will always do more cars than its smaller counter part.
Just make sure that its been serviced and that the 200k and timing belt has been done as Oxidious said.
And if it has nicely filled out log and service books, that at least gives you some idea of what the owners were like.

True that lads!
Good to get some good pointers as i never owned a good car with over 200,000kms so hopefully whatever i look at will be looked after

Most common problem with any cars is people not looking after the Auto trans. I wouldn't recommend going past two years without it being serviced. On the forum here I believe people have said to only use the Mitsubishi trans oil, as others may cause problems. In terms of high mileage 200,000km for a 10 yr old 3rd gen isn't really that high of a mileage, and it depends on whether its highway driving, or lots of stop-start and heavy accelerating.
First thing I'd do with any second hand car is a full service, including radiator flush, oil flush, transmission flush, brake (and clutch if applicable) flush, and power steering. All of these are important to get done on time, but I have noticed that people are blissfully unaware of the radiator, power steering, trans, and brake fluid changes until they have a problem.
In order of what I believe people don't know to get changed, taking in to consideration the typical servicing and what they do and don't do, from minimum to maximum is:
Oil
Brake
Radiator
Trans
Power steering

Good info mate!
I will keep this jotted down for if the right car comes along with high mileage.
I usually have my mechanic check all my cars over but its good to know of common problems so i can avoid any nasty bills straight up after buying the car.
