When doing a manual conversion, do you need to replace the ecu? And if so, why? Can a piggyback be used? or will the standard auto ecu be fine?
Thanks
(If your going to tell me to search, at least search for me then post the links to the relevant posts with the information im after :P )

From what i remember you can keep the standard ECU but you need to trick it some how into believing its in neutral something to do with the inhibitor switch.
This might help
when I came to wiring, I found that on the inhibitor switch you need the connect Black/yellow and Black/Red together (this is what tricks the ECU into thinking that it is in neutral). Then for the Reverse switch I connect the Black/white wire to the red wire on the reverse light plug the red/blue wire to the red/blue wire on the plug. Its should now start.

I have the auto ecu and cruise and it's all working.
I can't believe you are so lazy to ask others to search for you...?

He said if you're going to tell him to search... Bit of a difference. Please don't make this thread go off topic.

Hey mate. I've converted to manual also. Still using the auto ecu. ECU has been switched to think its in neutral so it starts. However i can no longer use the cruise :( It still switches on, but won't set or anything. Not quite sure how to change that.
If you wanna have a look at anything, you are welcome to pop the hood of my car for a peek :)

Awesome, thanks! I did have a couple q's i wanted to ask you, but it can wait for another day :D
Does anyone know if theres been a successful conversion from a 5spd auto to a 5spd manual? I had someone tell me today that there is some sort of different plate between the 5spd auto and engine compared to the 4spd auto (which apparently uses the same plate as the 5spd manual)

It's probably for the sandwich plate, spaces out the starter motor or something.

Madmagna will confirm, but as Lucifer said, probably the sandwhich plate, which you will use a manual one anyway.
You will have no worries converting 5sp A to 5sp M mate

Sandwich plate from auto to manual is different, the starter hole is slightly different position
The auto ECU while it can be used with no dramas does have a very different timing curve thus the manual one is beneficial. If you can get a manual one, get it unlocked you are better off but if it costs you big bucks then dont worry
The other thing to watch is to make sure that your flywheel has not had the flex plate removed at any time, it can go out of balance if it has
The 5spd craptronic has larget drive shafts in the trans end also, you will need the LHS shaft and the intermediate shaft to do the conversion, the RHS shaft should be fine ( have put a TF 3.0 shaft into a TJII recently and fitted fine as was the RHS one)
