I've now got Monroe GT Gas shocks on the rear of my TJ wagon and want (need) to fit them up front as well.

As I'll be driving right down the east cost from Mackay to Canberra (ie via Brisbane and Sydney) over the next few weeks does anyone know of a supplier I can call in on along the way to pick them up for a great price?

I'll fit them myself once I get home (to avoid paying the small fortune I parted with when I had the rears fitted in Perth a few months ago...)

Are you really set on Monroes? The last few years they've been a pretty poor shock, I've had a couple fail on various cars in the last 5 years, the most memorable one being a GT Gas that blew it's seal out at 25k kms and then they wouldn't warranty it.
I don't even thing GT Gas have very good valving any more, they're certainly not a very sporty shock, like they used to be.
KYB are teh go for affordable shocks, if they make them in a Magna fitment.
Kmatr buy their shocks from Repco, so you are just paying them to buy them in........

Regards, Andrew.

I'e got GT Gas on the back, so I was planning on matching the front :-)

What was the warranty problem you had? It's not good if the 3 year/60 000 km warranty doesn't mean much.

The rears have now done nearly 20 000 km with our Jayco camper on the back of the car since we fitted them in Perth in early June, and the wagon feels fine (ie not to hard) with and without the van on.

I got a price of $198 per side from Repco (Casino, NSW) this morning. I'll try the ACT stores when I get home in a couple of weeks.

When you say $198 per side, do you mean each?

Yes, each: passenger side $198 and driver's side $198

I think the rears come in pairs, whereas the front are sold individually. I was just trying to avoid confusion, but it looks like I caused some!

Yeah, sorry mate, just didn't know they were sold like that. Why would they sell the rears in pairs and the fronts individually?
Anyway, from those prices, you'd be far better off with a set of KYB's or Boges, they leave Monroe for dead.

mate i bought a set of monroe gt gas shocks last mth from autobarn in rockhampton.. they cost me 137 each for the fronts and 210 for the pair on the rear... shop around i found because most places have diffrent wholesalers so the prices will vary... i was qoute from the 137 to almost 300 each for the fronts and rears went between 200 and 450 for the pair..

but personally i wish i hadnt put the monroes on because they would have to be one of the worst shocks iv used... try the kybs or boges... i replaced my kybs with these monroes....

The rears are the same for each side. The fronts are "handed" - mirror images of each other. I guess that's why they are sold differently.

I had Monroe GT Gas shocks on my Rada pretty much for the entire time i owned that car. Got 4 shocks and 4 King Springs for $500 from Repco but that was a 3 years ago on a trade account. Never had any issues with those shocks and as a result I will be buying them again for my current car when the need arises.

Hey all

I dun wanna brag but i work at Repco... Not very good to work for but it has it pro's. (Rip Every Poor C*^t Off)

MONROE LHF PART # IS 35 0410
RHF PART # IS 35 0409

Now monroe have gone and confused everyone with a new part numbering system for TE, TF and think TH >>
I rang them and asked y. (I think the new Numbers are 35 0538 ???)
They could not give me an answer. Also the Rh Part Numbers come First. Who did monroe employ to do this!!!

And Yes monroe suck with their warranty!!!!!

They DO NOT PAY LABOUR to mechanics.
They are Unbelivably super tight ass about the most picky little thing.
They seem to handle like a Stiff Turd
They take about 1-2 months to come through!
But in the meantime the customer usually has to pay for another set.. and hope for a credit later (THAT SUCKS ****)!!!!!!!
97 % of the time monroe will allow a credit or replacement..... but only when they feel like it.
I am not kidding about this. This is how MONROE handle warranties!

Had my shocks checked today they'll need replacing soon LHF 35 0409 starting to leak slowly
Now imagine they come back for warranty in 30k km's and they dont warrant a staff member (NOT KOOL).
Had that happen on my Hydraulic gates t.b kit $450.00 + Nearly destryed engine cause the tensioner let go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the end i got my money back.

So for Monroe i aint buying their shocks....
And Ultima aint too much better.
So it might be KYB's or Bogoes

I hope this helps you...... in your decision..... in choosing Monroe S*** Absorbers

Does anyone know who manufactures the original Mitsu shocks?

Probably Monroe. They own the local OEM car market.
And I am sorry to hear you work at Repco Lo Magna, I could only handle it for six months. I've never worked anywhere with a more outdated, antiquated business model, pathetic computer system or with people who knew absolutely nothing about cars! The sheer arrogance of the people working there, thinking they were super heroes, even though they were earning $500 a week...........
I once saw a senior sales rep for Repco convince a customer that the radius rod bush he had mistakenly ordered in was in fact a lower control arm pivot bushing, and then sell it to him! The rep knew it was wrong, but every sale made his figures look better........
I've seen repco's markups, and frankly, I will never buy anything there unless I have no choice, or they have a sale on something. 150% markup is normal........

Regards, Andrew.

I went looking on ebay for my shocks. There was a Sydney mob selling KYB for $240/pr +post. I rang them up asked what best price was they said $198/pr + post not each. I got them to email me quote i went to my regular auto shop (autobahn) asked the sales person who i got along with well, could he match it. Didn't need to beat it just match it. He did and i paid for them right then, no deposit. They are a better shock than monroe on my car.

i am about to order front pair, if i get them at a good price ie $200/pr, i'll check on postage. i've just rung my autobahn friend and he believes at the prices you are paying he'll look into Koni's $220-240/each. This is country victoria.

i have put lovells under car which runs on lpg

oh, i don't work in auto industry, i am in disability service sector.

I can provide the strut mate as a pair for $90 plus postage if any one wants them

i have Monroe in my Wagon but these are soon to be replaced with bogue as the fronts are starting to soften up of late, have only done about 30k since install if even that to be honest

Now I am dealing Bogue will use them in my car but the strut mate is fantastic not only for the new bump stop but also keeps a lot of the dust and muck off the strut shaft

@Craney,

If you are passing through Dubbo, you could try a business called Regional Auto Spares (they are on the Newell Hwy in West Dubbo, about 200m closer to the river than the big Shell servo - on the "bypass"). Also, the Bursons Auto Parts store there have given fairly decent prices at times - its in Bourke St.

Sprints Autoparts, and Autobarn are both places i know that sell Monroe GT Gas, they also sell the newer GT Sports which i have heard nothing but good things about.

Repco i think also sell them, and City Discount Tyres i think can use them if they are doing a fitting service.

So there aren't any good Australian made shock absorbers?

Regardless of what you heard in terms of the Warranty, they have to replace it for you, full stop. Under the trade practices act, even if a warranty isn't offered at all if the product doesn't perform like it should its your fundamental and legal right for a replacement at no charge! Look up the trade practices act of 1974, print it out, and take a copy with you. When they refuse to give you the warrantly on the item, quote the trade practices act and they will act on it quick smart! If they don't, quote them again and say its written in government legislation, and they can argue with it all the like it won't change your rights under law! Then ask them if they have a phonebook so you can look up consumer affairs ;)

In any case, the company had to legally replace the faulty shocks free of charge, they only get away with it because people don't know their rights!

Thanks guys.

I got my GT-Gas struts for $155 each from my mechanic last week. I baulked at $50 or $60 per Strut mate though. The ones I ordered from the US are now somewhere between the Fed-Ex hub i Memphis and Sydney :-)

The Monroes will be fine for the "family" driving we do, and the (rear) GT Gas shocks we got last year have been great.

Might be interesting to check the Rockauto site for prices of more Diamante stuff.

I didn't buy from Amazon - I was just using them to show the list price in the US.

I bought from Rock Auto (http://www.rockauto.com/) in Illinois. I paid them US$12.13 each plus US$24.53 shipping.

Using the shipping tracker I can see that my new Strut Mates are now at Mascot :-)
