View Full Version : LSD getting fitted.?
Hay all
My Quaife LSD will be getting fitted today. My gearbox mechanic who will be fitting the diff was showing me a couple of things. He showed me stock diff and how all the little gears inside of it had a couple teeth missing from each one of them.he said the only damage was when the little teeth came out of the diff they hit the big gear thats bolted to the diff. Does anyone know the name of this gear called.? Cause its taken a couple of little chunks out of a couple of cogs on that gear. Even though there are a million little cogs im worried something will break cause he said he does not no if they even can get that gear in. He said hes gonna smooth out the little cogs with a special tool.? Will this be safe.?
Thanks Kurt
I think i remember now its called the crown wheel i think.?

If it's the large gear that bolts onto your diff centre then yes, it's the crown gear.

Yeah thats it. Its got a couple of chips of a couple of the teeth on the wheel. My gearbox mechanic said he doesnt even know if they sell the wheel by itself. He said its safe to smooth out the teeth with a special tool would this be safe.?

Hard to say if its safe without seeing the crown wheel. Can you get some clear, not fuzzy, close up photos.
The other issue is whether the damage extends into the remaining tooth area, particularly down to the root of the tooth. If the teeth look OK it would be wise to get the gear crack tested. If it lets go it could destroy your LSD or other gears. I don't know how brutal your LSD is, but some can put a lot more shock stress on the gears when moving torque from one axle to the other.
Cheers,
Alan

depends on how long u are going to want it going...
those little gears otherwise known as the spider gears have taken chunks out of ure crown not good sign...
reading some of your other posts uve gone through a couple of diffs????
with out see the diff hard too say can be done but it
also depends on your driving style if ure nice and easy and have a standard clutch should be fine for ages
but in saying that if the crown wheel is not in good shape now and u have a heavy clutch and like doing burnouts or just hard shifting then it couuld let go very soon... causing a lot more damage than just the spider gears....
**** thats shit. Well my gearbox mechanic sayed to me if u replace the crown wheel u have to replace the rest of your gear set because of some reason so hes saying u have to get another 3 gen 3.5l gearbox chuck my LSD in the other box then go from there. The box is back togethor i cant get pix. Theres about 5 teeth or 6 teeth that have slight damage on the teeth there just little chips taken from the teeth some chips are on the outside of the teeth and some on the inside. But there not massive chips there small.
There is only damage on the crown wheel nothing else has damage.

crown gear, methinks you all are referring to. They can take a lot of surface damage, but not cracks, and surface imperfections can lead to a noisy differential.
Ok well there are chips out of the crown wheel on some of the teeth witch have been smoothed out. So i dont know wat to do because i dont wanna have to keep taking my box out of my car. Wat are people thoughts.?

new box.
but it depends on the condition, so its a guessing game atm, it could work well, or it could break,
Anyone now else now about the crown wheel.?

not sure on your last post lol, but mate dont install it with a dodgy box, you will be waiting for it to go every time you drive it. better safe than sorry.

Not sure if the crown gear for Magnas is easy to source or even replace (I've only ever done it to RWD cars) but I wouldn't be leaving the damaged one in there, especially on a FWD car where the differential is part of the gearbox.

im confused
you have a re-con'd gearbox and a brand new diff
how is it that any parts are damaged at all?

The first time i got it recod. Then second time when the standard diff broke it slightly damaged some of the teeth on the crown wheel.

it depends on the small chips and where they are on the tooth.... below the contact line and the gear is automatic throw away, also depends if the hardened surface is starting to wear and if there are any signs of cracks... at work we have a massive book dedicated to gear damage and what can and cant be reused....

Ok well i remember a chip on the outside of one tooth. There was a chip taken away from the middle of one tooth that was pritty small but there was a little chunk missing. and there was a couple other chips aswell but dont remember were they were.
Can anyone tell me were below the contact line would be on crown wheel teeth.?

shouldnt you be asking your gearbox mechanic these questions?
he is the one who has actually been working on it.
and should know what the best cource of action to take

Small pieces of crap in the box equals Bye Bye gearbox. It will munch gears.
Ok end up risking it. And swapped a crown wheel from another 3.5l box. And now im stuck with a box that i braught for no reason. thinking i was gonna swap all the parts into. So yeah if anyone wants a 3.5l manual box with 140km on it pm me gearbox mechanic said everything runs perfect in it.
WOW LSD fitted. Feel beautifull drives nice im not getting any LSD knocking going around round abouts either witch is good definatly grips better.

Ok mate, OK.
thats right thats RIGHT:badgrin:
Kurt do you have a strut brace?
Kurt do you have a strut brace?
No i dont.?
That really helped with the FWD behaviour in the corners. I would say it is a close second to rear sway bar in terms of bang for buck. I find traction is MUCH better out of corners with the bar on, feels much flatter
