there was a thread on 2 oils people had used, that seamed pretty good, as some ppl were complaining that their second was a bit notchy, which mine is atm, i think i will go with that next time i change the oil.

i think its down to personal opinion really and the individual cars condition, to how it would respond, i think thats a big call to claim "its the Best". i will try one of those oils reccomemned in those threads as it seams to solve the exact same issue that i have.

castrol SAF-XA. takes a while to warm up, but I haven't had any probs on the track. I'll take a couple of notchy shifts when cold for the extra protection at high temps.

cheers,

whats recommended for the lsd?

mate, after all the trouble you've been through surely your happy to fork out a bit extra (like an extra $40) to get a good synthetic oil for your box?

Redline lightweight shockproof is a GL5 spec oil and will destroy your brass syncro's. Please don't use any GL5 spec oil. What's good for skylines isn't necessarily good for Magnas.

Redline MT90, Redline MTL (http://www.redlineoil.com.au/Uploads/Downloads/tech%20dataweb%20MTL%20MT90%20spec.pdf) and Castrol Syntrans 75W-85 (http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp_internet/castrol/castrol_australia/STAGING/local_assets/downloads/s/Syntrans_B13127.pdf) are all good oils for our transmissions.

I'm currently using a mix of 2Qts MT90 & 1Qt MTL. Works well for me and I'll use it again.

I've read that Castrol VMX80 improves shift performance and is a cheaper alternative being mineral based. May be worth a try if spending $90 on gear oil scares you :eek2:

Good luck with whatever you choose :)

like I said, with my Quaife I've been using Castrol SAF-XA. it's a bit heavy before it's warm, but handles the track pretty well. might suit your driving style...?

Seems that all the oils that are for LSD boxes are GL5 witch is not the right mix for manual magna gearboxes.

Been using SAF-XA in my transxle (has ralliart LSD) since I started tracking the car 4 years ago as recommended by an EVO guru and it has handled some serious usage with no issues, drain plug comes out pretty damn cean.

sorry, i confused myself.. i use saf-xa in my transfer case and rear diff.. i DO NOT USE GL-5 SAF-XA in any of my gearboxes.. the SAF-XA is recommended for evo transfer and rear diff only.. NOT THE TRANSAXLE (gearbox)

as mentioned, GL5 is not the correct oil for evo or magna gearboxes.. you need a GL4

the castrol synthetic oil for magnas and evo gearboxes is:
CASTROL SYNTRANS 75W/85

mineral oil is the: CASTROL VMX-M SAE 75W/85, API GL4.

in saying that, cummins has used SAF-XA in his box for years with no issues...

personally i wouldnt use SAF-XA in my gearbox.. but cummins seems to have no problems doing so..

"Most manufacturers of manual transmissions and transaxles recommend an 80W or 90W GL-4 lubricant. GL-5 gears oils which are required in hypoid differentials are not used in most synchromesh transmissions because the chemicals used to provide the extreme pressure protection can be corrosive to synchronizers, which are commonly made of brass or bronze. Typically, the use of a GL-5 lubricant in a synchromesh transmission will shorten the synchronizer life by one half. The extreme pressure requirements of spur gears and helical gears found in transmissions are not nearly as great as found in rear-wheel drive differentials. A GL-4 lubricant provides adequate protection for most manual transmissions, unless a unique design consideration requires the extra protection of a GL-5"

Oh ok. But this oil could look after my gears better in the box because the GL5 protection is superior to GL4.?

"corrosive to synchronizers"

GL5 not kind to your synchronizers

mate, if Castrol Syntrans is good enough for hi powered evo's being taken to the track its truley more than enough for you low powered magna being driven on the street..

no oil can compensate for pure abuse ... good oil combined with some mechanical sympathy your car will be nice to you
