Hey guys,

First time car buyer and I got myself a 2nd gen 1991 Magna TR.

It came with a roadworthy that listed and fixed defects in minor things such as the horn not working, hazard lights switch etc.

However, I had my suspicions that it wasnt 100% so I took it to my local Kmart Tyre and Auto to just run over the roadworthy points for me.

They found:

1. Tyres have heavy age cracks
2. Rear struts leaking both sides, rh leaking, lh leaked and then dried
3. Front disk rotors undersized
4. Moisture in both front indicator lenses
5. Rhf Caliper hangs uneven, caliper wear brake pad very low
6. Rear passenger interior door handle not able to be utilised in an emergency

Now I'm a realist - its an old car, things are going to be wrong with it. But a list that big of things that are central to the RWC? Come on, clearly something isnt right here.

What do you guys think? Do I have a leg to stand on challenging it? I think Vicroads and the VACC would be interested in folk who like to circumvent the guidelines.

Not sure what you mean by 'challenging' it, if you mean legally, then it's almost certainly not worth it.. By all means report them to your states authority (assumming that's what vicroads/VACC is), here in QLD it's called the RTA or Road Transport Authority. If indeed the authority is actually bothered to do anything and the RWC is found to be falsified, then they will most likely lay charges against the individual(s) in question.

Good-luck getting the issues on your car sorted, looks like a trip to the wreckers is in order! Should be able to pick yourself up some cheap rotors.

Cheers.

1. Tyres have heavy age cracks- highly possible. if tires are older than say, three years, then i'd have them chaed $200maxxxxx
2. Rear struts leaking both sides, rh leaking, lh leaked and then dried- not surprising (old car probably orig. struts) $?
3. Front disk rotors undersized- probably been machined too many times $20ea from wreckers
4. Moisture in both front indicator lenses- replace $40 from wreckers
5. Rhf Caliper hangs uneven, caliper wear brake pad very low- seized caliper probably, replace $20 wreckers
6. Rear passenger interior door handle not able to be utilised in an emergency- B]it's broken, replace $11 wreckers.

well at least its not as expensive as what I thought it may be if it turns out im stuck footing the bill! and i suppose i should consider myself lucky there weren't more problems (y). oh and the tyres are date stamped 1999, so quite out of date. its a wonder these things passed the roadworthy =S

I just thought that they'd want to avoid the inconvenience of me lodging a complaint and would offer to fix it all before things got to that stage. in an ideal world I suppose...

I'm up eltham way, Yann89, up in the 'green wedge'. Thanks for the welcome, i look forward to participating!
