Hay all

I wanna learn how to strip and or replace parts in a manual gearbox. Im sick of paying for gearbox repairs. So for near future i wanna learn how to do it myself. Cause i was looking at my manual gearbox doesnt look hard at all to crack it open so i wanna learn how.? Is there any kind of manuals or guides on gearboxes. On how to replace parts for magnas or FWD gearboxes.?

Thanks Kurt

go to the wreckers and get a cheapie to crack open and muck around with. I know of a website you can get overhaul kits for 4x4's as for magnas not sure. Am going to more then likely reco my cruiser box myself, just dont fancy paying more then the cars worth to reco a box lol. - also have a wrecker on standby with a spare in case its harder then it looks. Good luck with it.

pulling apart is easy

re-assemble PROPERLY isnt as easy

are you able to pull the box out and put it back by yourself?

ah ok.. the reason i asked.. its not a cheap job pulling the box out and replacing it (whatever your mechanic charges you for labour for doing a clutch, this is what he'll charge to remove and replace the box)

so.. if your mechanic takes a box out for you.. you try rebuild it.. think its ok.. mechanic puts back in it.. box ISNT rebuild rigth.. then what?

Yeah true. But thats why i wanna learn how to work on gearboxes cause i reckon i wouldnt take much to learn.

Best left the the experts.. Basics will get you know where. It will only end in tears..

U are best off doing some form of Tafe Course if you are serious about it all. There has to be a home mechanics style course they offer.

yeah i agree do a small tafe course. manual boxes are not extremly hard but being combined with a diff, thats whats hard. if you dont get it to mesh properly it will run but not for long and will destry it in the process.

will be cheaper and less painfull on the back to do some study first.

Yeah pull it down to start with and see what you think.

i see SCA sells the rebuild kits for manual gearboxs startin at $500, there is your first step. my shitty sec gen book outlines the procedures to rebuild a gearbox.

MANY years ago, I pulled apart and replaced 3rd gear in a Morris Minor 4 speed box. It can be done, but there's tiny springs and balls everywhere. How mechanically minded are you?

I also tried to pull apart the gearbox for my GSR Galant, as it was leaking oil. I couldn't separate the two halves, there must have been something in there that I couldn't find. I tell you what, getting the GB back into the car was a real struggle. You can lower them out on a trolley jack, but you try lifting one back up onto a trolley jack to put up into the engine bay. Mine wouldn't fit under the front of the car on the jack, so I had to put the box in under the car first, then try to lift it onto the jack from in the engine bay. I ended up rigging up a rope lift pulley from a piece of wood placed between the engine block and the strut tower to actually lift it, then get it on the jack for the final placement. An engine crane is probably required. That's all without even opening the gearbox.

did you pull the bottom plate off.. then remove the bolt holding the reverse idler gear.and then remove the reverse idler gear? .. with the reverse idler gear still in there, you'll only be able to lift the cover off a bit before it catches on the reverse idler gear...

the reverse idler bolt is the old torx headed bolt in the gearbox so you'll be able to tell which one it is....
