Hi guys, so I am chasing quotes at the moment in the Brisbane region to re-do the suspension in my AWD TJ Series II.

Problem is, I am getting SOOOOO much mixed information and I don't want it to cost me an arm and a leg for something that shouldn't be this complicated.

I got the Pedder $18 check done just out of interest, and it confirmed a couple of my suspicions and they of course threw in a few extra things.

Ive spoke to a number of places afterward trying to compete prices, but they have all offered varying advice. Things like, no record of a spring to suit an AWD from King Springs, go with KYB, don't go with KYB, change your bushes etc etc.

Does anyone have their AWD lowered? Who did you use, what parts and part numbers have worked mainly to do with King Springs. I think the setup I want is KYB Excel-G shocks and King Springs lowered 40-50mm.

Anyone throw me a bone here?

You could try phillcom # is 0434828207, Shaun is a fairly knowlegable guy and will steer you in the right direction. Checkout Zeros AWD, i think Zero went through Shaun. Correct me if i'm wrong Al.

Anything that was available for the FWD will fit in the AWD. (Except swaybars)

As said above, contact Shawn from Philcom for a KYB/ King Low package, then have them fitted somewhere close to you......not Pedders!

Yeah don't touch pedders mate.

Kings lows 45mm drop (FWDsprings the same) look great if you are running standard rims. Al is running SP's 30mm drop with bigger rims/wheels and it looks to have the same guard clearance as mine running lows with standard AWD rims.

THe lows are a great feeling spring, not giving you a harsh ride but greatly improving handeling. Can highly recomend Monroe GT Gas shocks too. Great comfort ride but great handeling when needed.

Graham fitted lowered springs to the front of his TL AWD. He wanted more neg camber to reduce shoulder wear on front tyres and wanted more high speed stability and getting the nose dropped helps immensely, plus of course gives flatter cornering.

On the heavier TL he thought the spring rates were too soft so he got a custom set made. If you message me I'll pass on your details to him and he can give you the details. I think they dropped the car 43mm one side and 40mm the other.

Cheers,
Alan

I have Kings' SPs on my AWD.
My opinion is that the spring rate is too low for the heavier AWD.

Still too easy to bottom out the front suspension, also there is very little suspension travel.
Can just get a little finger between the coils when the car is on the ground.

But isn't the AWD only like 20kg heavier? And most of that will be towards the back thanks to the extra diff & drive shafts.

Lots of good advice so far.

I plan to lower the front of mine about 30-45mm but will probably leave the back standard height and with a bigger swaybar to stiffen it up.
I can't decide if I'll get Kings like everyone else (tried & true?) or get progressive rate springs made up by K-Mac who I've used before and like their products.

Theres between 70-90kg difference in weight depending on model from FWD to AWD

Interesting, and other details that I've found are inconsistent.

Sorry for the side-track. I'm going to search for other threads covering this or create a separate one as I'm interested in the weight differences.

Graham.

In regards to the suspension, from the research I've done, it appears that the rear setup in the AWD's was sourced from the rears in the Sports FWD's. I'm not sure if there are any differences in the front setup.

The AWD is about 120kg heavier and about 25 kg of that is over the front wheels on TJ and 40 kg on TL/TW. Note Mitsubishi numbers at the front axle:

TH Sports Auto 1498kg front axle 1035kg

TJ Sports Auto 1505kg 1085kg

Ralliart Auto 1550kg 1089kg

TJ Sports AWD 1625kg 1108kg

TL VR Auto 1547kg 1097kg

TL VR AWD 1670kg 1137kg

As you can see from my avatar, mine is dropped with the super low king springs l also use the Koni adjustable shocks. I think this is a good combo especially with the 18's. If you want part numbers let me know and l should be able to dig them up for you.

Mate, I'd be interested in the Koni part numbers when you get a chance please.
thanks in advance

I have used Lovells and KYB on my KW GTVi. It is beautiful over the standard spring set up on them. $200 for KYB/pr and $130/pr for springs.
only thnig i have heard against them is they aren't Kings. So they're BLUE and not YELLOW

I initially ran King SuperLow front and Low rear with KYB Excel-G in my TJ AWD sports. All parts were for the FWD models in the catalogue. Over time (<3000km) the springs settled in and I found the fronts to be too low, constantly bottoming out on the front bump stops and trying to skip across the road mid corner. Guess 20mm of downward suspension travel wasn't enough for the KYBs to do their thing... fair enough I spose!

I recently swapped the front SLs out for King FWD Ls and am now much happier with the ride. Also took about 10-15mm off the top of the factory HD foam bumpstops with a hacksaw while I was in there. I can still bottom out the front over sharp bumps in the road, but it now takes a lot more effort to do so and happens way less often. Got the Ls from an AMC member with ~40K on them (so pre-settled I guess?) The ride height rose slightly, so not quite as good looking as before, but still not too bad (for a car that must remain practical) IMHO.

A lot of the FWD guys like the SL-F/L-R combo (for good reason), but I really think that the added weight over the front of the AWD makes the LOW a better choice up front.

SuperLow-F and Low-R (the day they were fitted)

Low-F and Low-R (several thousand km after install)

Hope that helps!

35mm drop, just got shorter springs, $500 with wheel alignment. no real complaints, does the job but a little floaty through bumps
